Lamont Paris, South Carolina

Paris got a big extension after winning SEC Coach of the Year in 2024, but has struggled since and is trending for a second straight sub-.500 season. South Carolina has consistently been near the bottom of the SEC in roster resources and is expected to give Paris some much-needed help in that regard this spring.

What say you, now or later?
Looking at his record, it's now. But looking toward the future, who can we get that can turn it around quickly enough to make supporters happy?

Jmo- tough not to give someone resources and then fire them because they are struggling. Going to a gun fight with a knife. With our basketball history, do we really think we can win being near the bottom in resources?

I’m usually on the other side of that argument, but I can understand if that’s the route they take. It is hard to be at the bottom in resources and expect NCAA Tournament results.

Not sure what coach would accept job with such limited resources.

Does anyone know what these "roster resources" are compared to other schools? I keep hearing we are always at the bottom, but no one seems to know anything about actual numbers.

It's sounds like a way for the university to get everyone behind keeping a awful coach.
If you watch this team play they are disorganized and sometimes lack effort. No amount of NIL will fix that.

We’re too poor to afford the buyout la of our coaches and the future coaches while navigating the insane expense of stadium renovations coming off an abysmal football season. Gamecock fans have to accept that USC is extremely poor compared to many of our P5 counterparts.

I don't know. We can pay Sellers around $4million to be an average qb and Beamer $8+million to be a mediocre coach and Paris $4million to be a terrible MBB coach while doing a massive stadium renovation. It seems like "poor" isn't the best adjective to describe the financial condition.

There seems to be plenty of money for WBB.

Exactly, and now we have no money left to make necessary changes to our programs. NIL isn’t coming from that same budget I don’t think. Throw that out the window and you’ve got an incredibly poorly run and mismanaged athletics department while other programs have budgets and donors available to make necessary changes. Kansas Stateis paying the same amount we would to fire their basketball coach. So the problem is that we had an AD who identified horrible coaches, did a horrible job managing their contracts, and a new AD who is leading the charge on stadium renovations that have clearly left us without any money to air the necessary changes needed to turn the programs around.

We are not firing Lamont Paris this year. Probably not PM either and I think SB gets next year and one more.

We are the laughingstock of the SEC. Thank you RT.

Everything i have read and heard is that we had limited resources for basketball. If you know something to the contrary, please share your sources.
Matt Anderson of TBS and inside the Gamecocks podcast stated that after talking with a bunch of sources, we spent close to $6M this season on a roster.

it’s also been reported that Lamont had more money available and he didn’t spend what was actually available to him. He did not feel he needed to ask for more either which would have been made available according to another report.

I know you don’t like it because it destroys your narrative of it simply being a money problem, but we have a coach that can’t evaluate talent, can’t recruit well, and is at a significant disadvantage now because he’s perceived as a guy that can’t win based on 3 of 4 atrocious seasons.

That's the exact opposite of what I've been reading and hearing. If these sources are correct, I am on board with letting him go.

The AD knows the facts. I'm sure he's gone if he didn't take advantage of the resources available. If he wasn't given resources, it may be a different decision.

Reading the tea leaves and some others have echoed this, he thought he put together and SEC roster. Hes not gone because we can’t afford the buyout. We tied up all our money over the last 10 years in awful contracts — buyout Muschamp, buyout Kingston, raises to Beamer and Paris, Maineiri’s inexplicable contract where we would have to pay a 100% buyout— then we fired Frank Martin, tied up money in stadium renovations. The hit every school took from Covid… we have been bankrupted and we have no donors able to pay what we need to make a move. The fact that we didn’t fire our men’s soccer coach when he hasn’t had a single winning season should tell us how badly managed our athletics department has been.

If he's not fired after this year, it means one of two things:
1. We're stupid
2. We don't care about basketball

I suppose it could mean both.
or the buy out Ray Tanner foolishly gave him after that one good season is just too much to absorb. I mean seriously how stupid was that decision, worse then the decision to hire him in the first place!

I watched a clown coaching our team tonight. I love the way he talks to officials and our team as they come off the floor like they’re in science class and he’s explaining something to them. And I’m so tired of him not playing a seven footer that has bulk, plays decent, and helps us against big teams when he’s in there. Problem is, how much help can you be four minutes a game?

I’m going to put together a tape of all the games we’re getting our heads bashed in and looked like a peewee team trying to get rebounds, then when he puts the big guy in that changes and we start coming back. Then he takes him out and you never see him again.. You can’t play in the SEC with a bunch of 6’5 and 6’6 guys.

It’s plainly obvious every single game. It was plainly obvious last night. Same thing, over and over. Strangest coaching I’ve ever seen. You went and got yourself two seven footers, one of whom is a unit, and keep them on the bench while the opposition practices alley oops. You put a seven footer in, the opponent stops scoring at will, we make a comeback, so you take the seven footer out lest we get ahead. Back to watching alley ooping.

Sort of like watching the football coach on the sidelines? The only real difference is the football coach doesn't act like a science teacher, he acts like an unhinged lunatic.

Sounds like somebody's narrative was blown up over facts and it wasn't my narrative. It's been confirmed it was a money problem. I stated it would be hard to fire him given that competitive resources weren't provided. The school confirmed he wasn't provided resources to put a competitive team on the court. The AD has the facts and made the correct call.

Sad day for those that wanted him fired.

What does clemson spend on MBB? They field a competitive team and we should be able to match their spending.
Like the SEC, exact NIL budgets for ACC men’s basketball are not public, but analysts, coaches, and NIL trackers have produced reasonable estimates of roster costs (NIL + revenue sharing). Clemson is in the upper third of ACC schools at $7-9M currently (per ChatGPT). Average ACC roster budget is about $8.2M, SEC about $9.7M.
