It’s a limited roster with a low ceiling and low margin for error. You can play around with the puzzle pieces but this is what you got.

Looking at all the teams and likely scenarios, I think Iowa is locked in as a 9-10 seed. Although again it’s a really weak bunch of resumes.
Play for the 10 seed and hope they find some luck. 8/9 and this season is draino.

Irrational and unrealistic after losing to two of the worst teams in the conference?

I get what you're saying and I'll give the man a fair chance, but I've seen this movie before. Many, many times. It's gonna be hard for me to get very excited until something changes. Losses like today are so "Iowa".
Not losing to bottom feeders like Maryland and PSU are two reasons I was so excited about Ben's hiring. The loss to Maryland was bad. The loss today, in the context of this season, was absolutely horrible. I'm still in shock. Even winning at the buzzer would have been fine. Just find a way to get the W. Instead, they choked. Horrible game from Alvaro after just playing his best game. Stirtz worst game of the season, all things considered. Koch with a great first half, but not much after that. Hausen finally got some minutes, and I thought "This is that game Ben's talked about where Hausen will win it for us." Nope. He tried, but he couldn't hit anything. I'm just stunned. Sure, we've all seen it before, but Ben was brought in to turn that BS around. Instead, it still stinks.

Beat Michigan or Nebraska and I'll be even more stunned than I was today. This has all the earmarks of a Fran fade--lose @ PSU, get embarrassed by Michigan, maybe get embarrassed by Nebraska, lose first game in BTT, saddle up for the NIT. Say it ain't so . . .

BTW: At least the madman in DC has launced a war in the Middle East, and his minions at Paramount have bought more media outlets (Warner Bros., CNN) to turn into MAGA propaganda machines to join FOX and CBS. Knowing that this country is now the West's version of Russia does make losing to PSU a lot less disturbing.

I listed the teams seeded 6-10 on Lunardi's latest bracketology in, I think it was, Fran's bracketology thread.

There's teams that can move up or down a seed line if they get hot or cold.

Iowa will be coming in ice cold.
Yep. Thats typical every year. Just looked again. Don’t see Iowa falling below 36 really even with losing out. And that’s a 9 seed.

I get it. But it’s also a bit irrational and unrealistic. Gotta view this season as buying a stock of a company at its low with new management and starting to see some dividends even though it’s bumpy early.
Your words/praise imply that BM has brought us out of the depths of the conference standings.

This season is essentially on par with where we were much of Fran’s tenure - Average with nothing to show in the end.

This is just an irrational and inaccurate comparison. You’re comparing a coach with less than a year against a 15 year record.

FM missed the NCAA in 7 of 15 years at Iowa. Including 1st 3 and last 2.

BM already is producing more to show for it. And the seasons not over. Comparing the 2 makes zero sense at this point.

At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter

Whether they’re in or out, they’re not going anywhere

For me, it’s about getting excitement back into this program

And today was a huge step back
NCAA still brings excitement because there is always a chance for a run.

NIT bound. Can’t lose 4 straight and make the dance. They aren’t winning again this year. #franfade but with Ben
Sure you can, and even if a conference team doesn't make it they are more than likely Crown bound.

Mcollum lobbying and begging fans to come out and support this team. I get it. But it’s gonna take a while. The heartbreak runs deep with me. I’m just so apathetic still about Iowa basketball.

JFC. The leading Fran basher has quickly turned on McCollum because he couldn't devise a play to score with 1.8 seconds left from 90 feet away.
Leading Fran basher? But you’re absolutely right, that was a great play call at the end of the game. Silly me.

From the same afficioto that didn't think Pryce Sandfort was worthy of an Iowa uniform before the season started.

Could possibly be player of the year in the Big Ten and certainly will be on an All-Big-Ten team.

Didn't think too highly of Brock Harding or Josh Dix either.

Can you say whiny biitch?

Menopause must be hitting you hard today. It’s funny watching you make up quotes of things I said, but that comes with the territory I suppose. Can’t wait for your next spaz out, I’m sure it’ll be more of the same nonsense.

1st year coach with only 1 player returning from last year's roster? I had zero illusions of making the Sweet 16 sounds like you did though.

It was a Q2 loss. Torvik still has us as 100% tournament probability.
Yes, it was a Quad 2 loss. And Penn State now has 1 less Quad 1 win than we do. Last place team in Conference with 2 Quad 1 wins and won't dance unless they win the BTT. Crazy. They have Theeee Ohio State at home next, and then Rutgers. They could possibly end the regular season 3-0 heading into the BTT.

I went from being excited now we are in a cycle that just continues to be a who gives a **** anymore. I’ll just follow the women. At least they don’t embarrass us. Recruiting at this point is very suspect. In Ben we trust, I hope!!

Iowa looks to be an almost certain #9 seed in the BTT. That means that they get a game against the #16 or #17 seed. If they lose to Michigan, Nebraska and then lose that game, they would be a First Four team AT BEST, and likely out of the NCAA Tourney. You can't limp to the end of the season like that and get any benefit of the doubt. Iowa fans know this better than most, considering all the seasons with the infamous "Fran Fade."

Yeah, I am not convinced that Iowa is a stone cold lock. The scenario you just outlined would make me sweat on Selection Sunday.

D@mn those games @psu. Iowa ALWAYS plays like garbage in that building, for whatever reason.

Love that coach Ben has brought defensive discipline back to the program. Just needs to find more scorers.
Through January I absolutely agree. Someone posted a tweet that Iowa's defensive efficiency on kenpom was something like 16th in January.. And 240 or so in February. They closed out the month by allowing 64% shooting to a team that had won 2 conference games all year long, so I don't know what happened, but something changed.

CBS this morning has a new bracket and Iowa is an 8 seed. Just try to enjoy the ride with a first year coach, an NBA point guard and a roster full of mainly MVC kids rebuilding the crap that Fran left behind. Sure, this has been a rollercoaster but all of us would've gladly signed up for 20+ wins in year one in the B10 back in October.

Indeed losing to Maryland and PSU is super frustrating, yet the B10 is an interesting animal with OSU beating Purdue yesterday and Wisky losing to Oregon last week. Maybe, must maybe this pushes us to the 10 seed in the Dance assuming losses to Neb and Mich + whatever the heck happens in the Conf. tourney. Bubble is Charmin soft and the metrics, etc are our friends. Just enjoy a nice beverage on Selection Sunday as IOWA NOT IONA is called and you get to hear the CBS intro music and see the black and gold!

(Btw, I'm still not over that 98 selection show where Iowa should've been in and thought for sure it was the the Hawks when IONA showed up on the screen...:)
