This is a sobering read and I haven’t quite decided what it really means if it’s spelling out Rutgers will never find a way to compete or if there should be hope the revenue issue can be solved. I think it reveals more about who our peers actually are and I was stunned at how efficiently and profitable Nebraska runs its operation a school many hoped we would compare ourselves to on the court and field

Sobering indeed. In many ways, it’s hard to argue we belong. The only way out of this mess is substantial increases in corporate partners as Zinn is trying to do or RU finally gets a big whale or two that every other school seems to have.

Winning would help too.

because reality is based on on field performance, tradition, history and fanbase, we really do not belong in the Big 10. Harsh words but we only are in this conference because of the tv market.

Its not like we were Boise State in football or Houston/UConn in hoops where we had winning programs at a high level

Our hoops program was full of scandals and laughing stock with 20 plus years of no NCAA when we got invited. Our football program was a one year wonder with some mediocre seasons sprinkled in that any Big East football program could have.

Our tradition was the 60s and 70s. Ancient history in modern times. Our fanbase while fervant is small and dwarfed by professional teams of all sports. Fans never had much big time success, thats why they never gave and NJ residents simply not care enough to give or they support their alma maters

Rutgers better realize the benefit that B1G membership affords Rutgers ACADEMICALLY! Rutgers and the state need to pony up the funds to make us competitive in the revenue sports. Stop talking about the average alumni, the revenue differences between us and our competitors to too great in this environment. The AD is doing the right thing, there's a lot of exposure in the NYC media market for companies to take advantage of.

Here's a sobering thought, if somehow RU got relegated to the AAC, do you think we would be on the top of that conference from a revenue perspective? We would be lucky to be in the middle.

I hate what the NCAA/Courts have done by providing schools (St. Johns and Seton Hall) with the same revenue sharing as football schools. I am not a lawyer but it sounds like a unfair business setup.

4th highest paid coaching staff. Wow. Our expenses nearly doubled last 5 years.. but not a spending issue for a program that can't win and generate revenue from ticket sales, etc.??

Dickterman has a thing about RU. He and Mandel did that hatchet job about three years ago. Ever since the New York Times bought The Athletic, it’s gone to hell.

The football revenue number is ridiculous. Rutgers failed to spend the money needed decades ago and now we’re playing catch up.

Rutgers has corporate sponsors. Multinational tech firm SHI, based a few miles from campus, pays for stadium naming rights. Multinational, multibillion sandwich maker Jersey Mike's pays for arena naming rights. The SHI and Jersey Mike's deals each provide tens of millions to Rutgers athletics. Prudential, a New Jersey-based Fortune 100 company, is funding Rutgers NIL.

Rutgers will not have a whale. New Jersey sports whales - Wilf, Johnson, Tepper - buy NFL teams.

Let me add a few points.

Rutgers football coaching staff is not the 4th highest paid. The Athletic figure is for the top 11 football coaches, an NCAA distinction. The amount excludes the dozens of support staff, including the Schiano family members on the payroll as assistant coaches. Rutgers football's coaching staff is more than double the headcount of national champion Indiana's coaching staff. Including full coaching staff compensation, Rutgers is the 2nd highest compensated in the B1G, behind Ohio State. In fiscal 2025, Rutgers paid its coaches $6 million more than Penn State.

The Athletic report features a table of Rutgers athletics financial performance. One might notice an oddity in the 2015 and 2016 figures: The revenues and expenses were exactly the same. How can that be? Pat Hobbs fudged the numbers, as I pointed out in 2023 along with many other Hobbs irregularities. Hobbs was caught red handed - and the BoG promptly awarded Pat a raise and contract extension. He should have been fired on the spot.

Who cares ? Mostly those that want D2 type athletics or none at all, or those that just like to criticize RU or its coaches , or are RU haters. And if you don't recognize the significant , postive impact being in the Big has on RU's academic standing you're an idiot.Again who cares..

Bottom line Rutgers lacked the facilities, donor support and roster talent when they first joined the B1G Ten.Very little has changed to make the revenue teams more successful and with NIL and the transfer portal conditions are worse.

Schiano has no guardrails. He should be fired to stop the $ hemorrhaging. Hire a random coordinator out of a hat for a quarter the salary and results wouldn’t be worse.

This is all true but my question is simply why do they have to have over- invested so heavily on the staff (not quality coaches) and not put that $ towards the other needs or make investments that might actually result in additional rev. stream (for example finally got that NIL Manager and General Manager). The more and more I read it seems like Hobbs was a complete fail and idiot and looks like Schiano took advantage of there being no AD to control his demands for more.

It’s not “they”? See above. It’s the out of control buffoon who keeps the money dam wide open and doesn’t win anyway. Always moves the goalposts. Would be hilarious if he also said “google me” and the national public did and recognized that he’s nothing but an entrenched, arrogant salary stealer.

The NCAA should have jumped on NIL as soon as it raised its head. There could have been structure, rules and limits that makes more sense. The rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer as time goes on.

The NCAA tried to strangle NIL in the crib by challenging multiple lawsuits. There's no way NIL would have made sense or been managed effectively by the NCAA. We would have seen the same selective enforcement BS that we saw for decades, and the rich would have gotten richer anyway.
