REO Speedwagon.

The Hall is kind of a laughingstock. For years it was just whatever was obvious and obscure **** Jann Wenner liked, and he kept out tons of artists that should have obviously been in just because he didn't find them worthy.

Now they're trying to make up for that and pull in the money and interest so they're putting in country and rap and whatever comes next.

If you play something approaching rock and roll and you've filled up huge venues with fans you should probably be in. So the REO Speedwagons and Styx of the world should be in. Hell 3 Doors Down might qualify.

ETA Supertramp & Bryan Adams seem like no brainers to me.

Man I don’t think so. One great album. One pretty good album. And then sucked. I get that it was an incredible album. But that’s not HOF resume for me.
More than one great album and more than one pretty good album.

Reallly? Amanda was on their third album and it was awful (although Cool the Engines was pretty good). And they never really did anything after that (I mean they released a few albums but they didn't do anything).

well they sold more than 75 million albums and only 17 million albums were from their first album. I guess if you don't like them then that means they suck. got it.

That third album pretty much sucked, and I owned it and was excited to buy it when it came out.

If I remember correctly, a lot of it had been recorded quite a while before the release date. Kind of some dregs that didn't make earlier albums.

That said, Boston should be in the HOF based solely on the first album, which probably spawned more air guitar players than any other album in history (causing not an insignificant # of fender benders).

They haven't sold 75 million albums.
Boston - 17,000,000
Don't Look Back - 7,000,000
Third State - 4,000,000
Walk On 1,000,000
Everything else - <500,000

That's about 30,000,000 total with well over half from the first album, and a very strong downward trend for every album after the first one.

For bands I would go with

1. Boston
2. Toto
3. Kansas

Also can't believe Phil Collins isn't in the HOF as a solo act (he is in with Genesis)

They should be in, IMO. The problem is that Tom Sholz is such a damn OCD perfectionists that it took him years to put together albums. You strike while the iron is hot and Scholz didn't do it . After Don't Look Back it would be another 8 years before they released Third Stage (which BTW, had more than just Amanda and CTE on it - Can'tcha Say, HollyAnn and I think I like it are good songs). Then it would be another 8 years after that before Walk On was released. By then music had changed and only the Boston purists listened to them and they couldn't hit mainstream radio but Walk On is a solid record. Corp. America and their last release (life, love, hope) aren't what I would consider great records. It's one of those things that if you like Boston, you'll like those records. If you don't you probably won't.

You are way in the minority there as Amanda was actually Boston's only #1 charting song.

According to wikipedia:

The band has sold more than 75 million records worldwide, including 31 million units sold in the United States, of which 17 million were the band's debut album, and seven million copies of the band's second studio album,

R&R HOF should be like the Golf HOF. In golf you win 15 tournaments or 2 majors, your in. If the artist sold X number of records they are in. Just come up with the number. There is not a better measurement of fame than that. You can have another group that gets voted in due to influence / excellence / innovation. Why do you take something that has all that objective information and turn it into a subjective issue?

US sales of 31 million albums, with 17MM first album. Worldwide sales of 75MM, but no breakdown by album. So most likely about 40MM from first album.

I realize it was a big hit. But it was pure drivel.

It was an ok song in my book (Holly Ann and Cant'cha say much better ballads IMO) but what you're missing is that chicks loved it. I mean panty soaking wet loved it. That song led to a lot of guys getting laid in the mid to late 80's.
