He almost came to SHU to play for PJ

Interesting to think about those who "almost came here." Of course we really don't know how close they really were to choosing Seton Hall.
My list would include Bobby Hurley, Rodrick Rhodes, Gary Brokaw, and Adama Sonogo.

Al Harrington, Kyle Anderson,
Both committed to Seton Hall. In the case of Harrington he was coming if he wasn't a high draft choice.

In the case of Anderson he also committed to Sha in particular. But then UCLA made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

So we lost one player to the NBA and the other to UCLA.

However, with the verbal by Harrington, his (junior) high school teammate, Samuel Dalembert was so impressed by Amaker's recruitment that he committed to us the following year.

Don't forget Mike Glover, who did commit to SHU but was ruled ineligible that first year and because of Gonzo fighting with the NCAA to get him eligible we lost him forever.

Because I went to see him play often I got to know his dad well who also was in attendance at his games.

He told me his son was strongly leaning to the Hall. Then he commits to South Florida and his dad tells me they 'offered more'.

I presume the obvious, money.

In the preseason of Kyle's SR yr at St As they played a game in Paterson. A bunch of SH fans were there to watch him. I think Sina played too.

As I walked past the St As fans in the stands during warmups, the father of one of the players saw my SH shirt and got up to tell me Kyle told his teammates he was committing to us.

TA went to Al's HS graduation as I remember it.

Sat next to his dad that night and his father said the same thing.

Problem was dad and mom were separated and each wanted to latch on to their son.

Mom, sister and UCLA won out.

The “almost got” stories are romanticized and make for good message-board fodder. But whether it’s Seton Hall or some other school, I have to question a lot of these where the competitor “swooped in at the last second” justifications. Kids know where they want to go and ultimately they make the decision on whose last offer they are open to listen (the school that they wanted in the first place). The other schools are just used for leverage or in case that first school reneges recruits. Players and family members will often tell you just what you want to hear.

Andwe’ve been on both sides of it, but with a lot of the players in this thread, we have a drawer full of steak knives to show for it.

I was at that game, good times. Was that after Paterson Catholic closed up and most of their players went to Hudson Catholic? I remember they had the small pg Stewart who went to a small PA college, blanking on the name. And they had a 6'7 SF who I think we were recruiting too. Drawing a lot of blanks!

When we lost him I believe that's when PJ decided to get out of college BB.
I believe that great 30 for 30 documentary they had on ESPN about Felipe mania talked about us as being one of the 3 schools in contention. Proximity was a big factor, in addition to us being a really strong program at that time. Think it was us and Kentucky as the other two but I may be mistaken on the Cats. Also there was a Euro team trying to basically do the opposite of what colleges do now with the Euro kids.

I have a vague memory that Randy Foye was going to commit to the Hall if Amaker stayed. I believe Fred Hill was his main recruiter. Or did I misremember that? ;)

That Is what I remember. We should have told Orr to hire Fred.

Don't know if the story is correct but Elgin Baylor committed to the Hall but was denied admission.
I heard that story many many years ago. Never quite sure how factual it was, but the guys who believed it swore to its accuracy. God only knows.
