I'd park locketts butt on the sideline until he wants to put our effort every match. That was an overconfident ridiculously pathetic effort by that talented an athlete. If he isn't gonna work and give 100%. Sit his a'z down.
This is the last dual before Big 12’s, isn’t it? I don’t disagree though, seemed like every little effort after he was taken down.

Dee needs to improve his cardio. Breathing hard, waiting for last period to shoot after not getting his ballet double in first minute, are not recipes for winning against Caliendo.

He needs to improve a lot on game plan too since Caliendo controlled that whole match.

32-11! How ‘bout them Cowboys!
What a great win. Spratley wrestled smart and kept control of the match, but I was hoping for the put away the match 2nd takedown. A good win though. Jax was dominant and won by tech. Lots of takedowns and back points. I would give his effort and wrestling an A+. Sergio struggled until his opponent stalled on a shot and Sergio got the chance for the cradle for the takedown and then adjusts the cradle for the pin. His grip on the cradle is skilled and powerful. He does need to get more offense off his own shots. 149 we gave to them and they dominated our back up. Robideau won a solid victory with a takedown, riding time and an escape to win 5 to 1. Lockett finally experienced the cost of not coming out to wrestle because he feels he can win at the end of the match. Dee earned that loss and hope he learns from this match. Facundo had a chance at the end to win but messed up his chance for the takedown and back points. Kennedy controlled the match and gained that last takedown that I thought Facundo would get. Ryder won the match on a stalling call when Arnold just missed out on several takedowns during the match. Unjust but sometimes that is how wrestling goes. Ryders lack of offense is a concern. But this was a big win that stopped Iowa's momentum. I was glad to see Merrill being aggressive and he was rewarded by getting the match clinching pin. He needs to wrestle like this against all opponents. Great pin for Doucet. Great win by the team in front of a great crowd. I hope that Dee rebounds

Already had a stall. Cant back up there and he knows it but agree tough to decide on that. Don't think he was more active. Just little offense from both.
I thought they were both out and it shouldve been blown dead prior . And as a ref you can also call nothing there and nobody says a word it's not like it's 9-9 and one guys made a comeback while one was fading it was 1-1. And the only close takedown of the match was for Gabe. Just don't feel either did enough to win that match on a stall call

The Good:
We dominated Iowa, felt good to finally get one. Happy for the guys who showed up and wrestled well. Vega, Jax, Landon, Merrill and Doucet.

The Bad:
Dee was hard to watch. His lack of effort and hustle are embarrassing. He's a talent for sure but he appears to be out of shape and overconfident. Hopefully this is a wake up call.

We need to be recruiting over 174 and 184. Ryder hurt or healthy he hasn't impressed me at all this year and doesn't seem to show much promise moving forward with little to no offense.

Dee was an embarrassment to himself and his team. In the old days this would be handled internally, as the team would kick his a--, deservedly. This has been a problem with Dee all year. DT needs to have a serious talk with him about whether or not he wants to put in the work to be here. If not, see ya and what a wasted talent. But it happens.

I didn't expect Ryder to be back so his win is unexpected.

Def didn't have 3 Pins and a Tech Fall on my bingo card, total domination.

Lockett needs to quit being so lazy, him and Robideau are the only ones who aren't all gas/no brakes... They're the ones with losses between Jax/Sergio and them....

I agree that 174 and 184 have been disappointing up to now, but let's give them through NCAAs to prove themselves. If either of them can post more than 10 points, I'll be fine letting them run it back again next year.

The Little Rock, Iowa, and Big XII Tournament were our worst showings last year. If the VT dual was any indication, we might be on a similar trajectory this year. DT knows all will be forgiven if the boys go crazy at NCAAs.

All that said, we are so much better than Iowa that it shouldn't matter.

Great call on this, man. You are like Nostradamus.

Just got home.

Enough on Dee. He’s not gassed, he’s not lazy, he’s not the negative narrative being portrayed.

He does work hard and his team loves him. So, be careful banging on him after his 1st college loss to a guy that lives in the finals.

Dee is trying to manage matches. That is it. He’s trying to figure out the grind that is a NCAA Wrestling season. He knows he can score, he just needs to know he score 10 times a match if it’s needed.

Im tired, I’ll jump back in later. It was a great day for me. I’ll post some pics of gracious guys here that have tickets to kids and my thoughts. *the kids and tickets are the best thing about my day…almost

He tries to do just enough to win. Thats what burned him today. He's been watching too much of AJ Ferrari film when he was at OSU.

Im not defending this but here was my take with Dee.

I think Dee was trying to lull him to sleep and do anything he could to try to change Caliendos pace, then strike. Caliendo is so consistent with his pace and style, it seemed like Dee was trying to play some games with the pace.

Dee is a stud and will learn from this. Our coaches are always preaching about not worrying about the opponent and just go out and wrestle. I think I’ve heard Dee mention that he is one of the few guys that really like to watch a lot of film on his opponents. So I’m thinking he thought he had a good game plan and it just didn’t pan out how he thought.

keckeisen was notorious for doing weird things like, but keck would actually use it to produce a lot of offense. He would drive Plott nuts.

Also, I think Dee getting his first L right before post season is perfect timing. He was putting a lot of pressure on himself to not lose. He’s talked about it in interviews. Maybe he will feel more free to go out and wrestle now that he’s not carrying that weight of trying to stay undefeated.

Hopefully Dee wins the Big 12’s and avoids falling to the 4 seed.

I hope everybody has sobered up and chilled out now that it’s Monday. Not gonna sweat Dee’s loss. He lost as a true freshman to a savvy veteran who made adjustments from their first match. Would I like him to cut back on the hotdogging and edge wrestling? Yeah 100%. He’s too damn talented to wrestle that passively. He’s also a 19 (18?) year old kid.

It seemed to me that he was waiting for the last 10 seconds to try and score a match winning TD that would keep him from having to hold Caliendo down for very long. I admire the confidence, but you can’t bank on the buzzer beater every time. Adjust and refocus for the postseason. Play your cards right and you’ve possibly got another chance at Caliendo and the bigger fish at 165 as well.

Had a feeling Caliendo would get Dee this time around. Dee had been playing with fire all year with managing matches instead of cutting it loose. Almost wrestling not to lose instead of to win. He hadn’t been burned until now. Thought his reaction to losing was good. He didn’t pout. Didn’t throw a fit. Makes me think this will be a good thing he learns from and gets better with.

Didn’t enjoy the Ryder/Arnold match. Lot of bitching on X from the wrestling media crowd about how Arnold got screwed. Both he and Ryder have zero offense. You wrestle those types of matches, you’re going to get bad calls like that at some point. Don’t feel bad for Arnold because of it. I’m trying to maintain some perspective with Ryder because he is a freshman that is in the AA range. It is just hard to think we couldn’t do better at that weight because there isn’t much offense that has been shown all year.

Was good to see Cody dominate someone. I get it was a backup but did what he should do to a backup. I’m sure having DC there motivated him some.

Really enjoyed watching Zahid and some of the others mat side. Seems like he was trolling the Brands bros. Good stuff.

Alright boys and girls. It’s time for your 10th or 11th most-anticipated recap of the dual.

125: TCB. Beat a guy who beat him earlier in the year. Nothing flashy, but solid wrestling. Spratley looks ready for the postseason.

133: Not really sure what to say. I thought Forrest would win, but I did not expect him to dog walk Ayala like that. Ayala has definitely regressed this season, but that doesn’t explain away Jax’s dominance. Jax is as much the guy to beat as anyone at that weight.

141: Looked like it might be close until it wasn’t. Vega just has that funk to him that lets him catch guys and it’s so fun to watch.

149: Blech. I would guess there’s a chance Swid goes here if there weren’t bonus points at 133 and 141. An overmatched kid got worked. Hope we have depth one day like PSU does where this doesn’t happen.

157: Nothing pretty but felt pretty dominant to watch imo. I think Robideau wore Williams out and it was another workmanlike performance.

165: See comments above. Dee is too good to wrestle that conservatively. Flush it and move on. I’ll take Dee in a rubber match at NCAAs.

174: Please. Finish. Your. Shots. This is a weight I think needs examined in the offseason. Either with moving around guys we already have (Routledge/Dee) or the portal.

184: I’d rather watch paint dry. What an abomination of a match. Same thing as 174 for the off-season unless there is complete and total belief that Ryder is capable of finding his offense with an offseason of training. Winning in OT on a bad stall call should never happen.

197: Starter worked a scrub. TCB.

HWT: Starter worked a scrub. TCB.

Dual felt closer at times than the final score suggests only because we gave up bonus at 149 and lost at 165/174. Most guys looked good and ready for the postseason. Onto Big 12’s and NCAA’s.
