Okay, here's the playoffs scoop for McKenna and Archbishop Mitty:

It's a round-robin setup, and Mitty being the #1 seed gets the easier bracket.

Friday the 20th, they play at home vs. sacrificial lamb Half Moon Bay. I'd favor Mitty to win by at least 50.

Monday the 23rd, Mitty hosts St. Francis, a team they've played and beaten by 40-ish twice.

On Wed. the 25th, they play St. Ignatius, whom they've already beaten twice by 40-ish.

Should be three easy ones... If that turns out true, then (I think) Saturday the 28th, they play the winner of Bracket B... Winner move on to NorCal Open class... Possibly the loser gets the same, or a high seed in Division 1. THAT one might be a pretty good game... Maybe. The site isn't listed on the section's website, but I've heard that the final will be played at USF this year

Then the NorCals start... Some pretty dangerous possible opponents there, but we shall see...

Mitty is so much better than everyone in the section, they could very well win if they for some reason decided not to risk McKenna at all until NorCals. Of course, they won't do that...

For those that don't go to HS games normally... Here's a HUGE tip. Get the GoFan ticket app on your phone and learn how to use it. In many cases, schools don't even have cash boxes or take cash anymore.

Well.... I *WAS* gonna go... But I'm sick. :( Took a Covid test, got a negative, at least it isn't that...

Good news, the game is on NFHS at 6pm Pacific. NFHS is far from perfect, but for a HS hoops addict, it's the greatest!

So, the brackets for the California playoffs just came up... Here's McKenna's Archbishop Mitty path.

https://www.cifstate.org/sports/basketball/brkts_2026/open_girls (linking thru the above linky thingy didn't work; tried 3 times)

Top half of the bracket is NorCal, bottom half SoCal.

Mar. 4: First round bye for the 1 seed
Mar. 7: 2nd round, home game vs the winner of Carondelet and San Ramon Valley. (I have seen both of these play, and either one is capable of hanging close for at least a while... on a good day.)

Assuming the Monarchs make it past that round, Mar. 10 will be a home game (or maybe neutral site) vs winner of St. Mary's of Stockton/Clovis West of Fresno area. That could be a really good matchup, tho I favor Mitty.

Should the Monarchs get thru this round, they play for the state title vs. one of the SoCal powerhouses in the bottom half of the bracket on the 14th.

This will be at Golden 1 Center, home of the Sacramento Kings.

I'm hoping we see a return date of Mitty v. Ontario Christian, but OC was knocked to the SoCal 2 seed by Sierra Canyon last night. Very likely they'll face off again March 10 in the SoCal title game to see who comes up to Golden 1.

I am hopeful they go back to their 4 out offense next year. I would like us to find at least one strong perimeter player through the portal. Then we would use Ava, Layla, Journey, and McKenna in a rotation for our 4&5 positions. I believe McKenna will stretch the floor to help create more space for penetration to the hoop. I really believe that would open the floor for Addie and Chit Chat. It appears to me that Addie has in her DNA the desire to attack and score off the dribble. She hasn’t had the space in the triangle offense this year. I think it would be a win-win for everyone.
Stremlow is going to be a key component of next year's team. Her shooting has greatly improved, she is physical and scrappy. Her ball handling and decision making is great.

It's gonna be tough to remove her from the starting SG spot.
She's locked down the starting 2 spot for the next 2 years, and deservedly so. She's been terrific and the best perimeter player on the floor in a good number of games this year. She and Chit chat are a great tandem. Hopefully Deal makes the same kind of progress that Strem did her sophomore year and the Iowa guards will be very good the next few years.

I think McKenna will come in ready to go. She is a tremendous athlete. Three level scorer and very good rebounder. Something to note, the minutes played were low in many games because Mitty ran away from most teams.

I kinda think this also. I have a feeling she's going to be ahead of where Deal was. Could be wrong for sure but we will find out, can't wait to see

That’s what we thought about Deal. And she’s going to have to play the Piwer Forward position which is really tough and physical for a Freshman, no matter how good they are. I clearly expected way too much from Deal. I think she brings her along slowly and Journey starts at the 4. She’s earned it in my opinion. Now McKenna might come in and be great which would obviously be only a positive for the program.

We're not even to the conference tourney yet, and you're already talking about next year's starters? Me, too. Like Bluder, Jensen tends towards the veterans (Clark notwithstanding), so here is my line-up for game 1 next year. It may/will change by conference time.

1: Wright, Johnson
2: Stremlow, Levin
3: Deal, Mallegni/Rodriguez
4: Houston, Woliczko/Mallegni
5: Heiden, Hays

As I made the list, I realized that a portal player is needed even if no one leaves. Wright, Stremlow, and Deal will have the bulk of minutes on the three guard/wing positions, with Levin expanding her time in relief. That doesn't leave much room for issues arising, particularly if anyone leaves. If all three players who have been mentioned as potential portal players leave, we're down to a bare-bones 8-player team. Yikes!

DISCLAIMER: I often don't know what I am talking about. I feel right at home on this forum.

EDITED: @Jonesy5960 pointed out that I didn't write what I meant, so I did a substantial change to give Wright, Stremlow, and Deal will have the bulk of minutes but having Levin around, too, as a good backup.

I was thinking the same. People always seem to expect too much of freshmen coming in. Journey will be starting at the 4. You can take that to the bank.

I think you meant that Wright, Stremlow, and Deal would get the bulk of the guard/wing minutes. I assume Levin would be the first guard off the bench. Haven't seen enough of Johnson to comment. I think frontcourt is set, but an experienced guard via the portal would definitely be a necessary add assuming Rodriguez is gone.

Would like to see Journey at the 3 and McKenna starting at the 4 with Chit and Stremlow in the back court.
Today that would absolutely make sense to me. Next year I think it depends on how Deal develops and whether she can step in at the 3. McKenna will be freshman next year. Unless she's killing it when she arrives, Jan won't have her in the starting lineup.

Yes, you said what I meant. I will go back and edit it. And actually, Levin could have meaningful minutes.

I'll be surprised if Jan goes into next season and KJ is the backup point guard. Next season will be her 4th year at Iowa and she hasn't played a meaningful minute to this point.

Or Levin as the backup 2 guard.
I agree with both of the above-quoted posts. Iowa will be an attractive portal destination for next year. I am not clever enough to figure out who might transfer to Iowa, but I am wise-*** enough to suggest that Guyton portals back to Iowa to back up Wright. That assumes that the universe is weird. BTW- the universe is weird.

That would be weird alright. I think Guyton is happy where she is....
