The Georgia State boys had a very productive Wednesday night at the Bosh against Longwood. The duo of Michael Maginnis (LF) and Colin Hynek (C) put on a clinic going a combined 3-for-7 with all of the Tar Heels five RBIs. Its been a while since UNC has had quite the dynamic catcher duo, where the weight of the battery does not fall squarely on one set of knees. Hynek and Winslow have both been able to mash at the plate—Saturday's fireworks—and the former has shown that he truly is a catcher who can run, turning in two extra base hits against IU and a double on Wednesday.
Tyler Howe had his "welcome to Carolina" moment with a 9-5 putout showing off his range in the outfield.
The No Need to worry category:
Cooper Nicholson finally got his first hit as a Tar Heel. For all of those concerned about Nicholson's production at the plate, coming into today's game he had .438 OBP without a single hit. That is called finding a way to impact the game. A certain third baseman last year also didn't log his first hit until the fourth game of the season against Kansas State.
Owen Hull has also made his mark away from the 'H' category of the box score. Yes, he was 0-3 on the day but he walked twice, made a fantastic Vance-esque tracking over the shoulder jumping catch in center and nailed a delayed steal of third. His stint on the basepaths were indicative of the player who swiped 42 bags last season with George Mason. He also leads the team in walks with eight.
Happy Radar Gun category:
Say hello to 96 miles per hour, Caden Glauber—it even rhymes. The seventeen year old freshman had his best outing on the mound, tossing two innings allowing three hits and one earned run at the beginning of the outing but bouncing back with four strikeouts and zero walks.
Boston Flannery made his third career start and while he struggled with command in the second inning he did get his fastball to the mid trending towards upper 90s and generated five strikeouts.
The wire:
Longwood put up a good fight, loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth and giving the UNC pitching staff their first save opportunity of the season.
