I was watching the espn+ broadcast and they mentioned unc had a batting simulator that supposedly could simulate the Indiana pitchers.

Is this new this year? Did the players think it was beneficial ?

Trajekt.....we've discussed it in articles and on the baseball podcasts ahead of the season.

Only college team with the newest version...not all pro teams even have it.

Video of pitcher on screen pitching...the ball comes out at the release point on the screen.......having seen it in action, it's amazing. And can be set with any pitcher in the game....

this is horrible news
when something bad happens the board will complain that it’s inexcusable given the financial and training resources available
and blame coaching

Tommy, one clarification on this I've been wondering. I know they said we can choose any pitcher and all that, so we can choose like Zac Gallen to hit off of if we want to, and the machine can replicate him with all his same spin rates and other analytics.

My question is, does the machine have enough data in it to also let us simulate the starting pitcher for Richmond tomorrow? Or how many pitchers are in the "catalog" so to speak, and can more pitchers get added to the catalog throughout the season?

I think this is cool no matter what, but the opportunity for Gavin Gallaher to take 50 live at-bats off the upcoming starter for Richmond would be insanely beneficial, whereas taking 50 ABs off of Shohei Ohtani may be cool but a little less beneficial.

Of course Tommy could answer better/differently, but my assumption/understanding is that they would be able to at least mimic the arm slot/release point profile and combine it with all the other spin/speed data that they would normally have from Trackman or similar from the actual pitcher.

So even if it's a generic guy visually, they would be able to have a pitch that replicates things physically/mechanically.

So you would still benefit from practicing against a pitch that will look familiar rather than against counting on having a pitching staff member that is similar or generic machine BP (even if the guy on the video board of machine isn't literally the pitcher you will face)

Hope that makes sense.

The only limitation as I understand it is the amount of technical/analytic/spin rate and all the other data they have on pitchers now days. The more the better but yes….the preparation ability is through the roof.

Hell, they can hit off me if they wanted (paraphrasing a direct quote)….I told them only if I have Paul Skenes stuff.

Now, still doesn’t replace a live human factor

Forbes talked today about the weather being a detriment to getting pitchers live at bats but hitters have this…

My only wonder with this thing is I would assume getting other pitchers spin rates would be pretty difficult. Especially with stuff like this coming out, I feel teams would want to protect their pitchers from spin rates getting. I have no idea how available trackman data is from teams.

But either way its a huge advantage to be the only team in the country to have this.

I'm no techie. I just sign in to GoHeel.com and go to baseball. Go to schedule and find the game. Click on the link "Watch ". It takes me to the video. I have to sign in to my cable provider (Spectrum). I enjoy the games on my desktop monitor.
