Richmond Spiders at North Carolina Tar Heels
Tuesday, 4pm
Boshamer Stadium

TV - ACCNX
Live Stats

Probable Starters - RHP Chayse Gruber (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs LHP Kyle Percival (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Gruber started Richmond's season opener vs Monmouth, went 3.1 IP, gave up 2 hits (both were doubles), walked a couple, struck out one and hit one. Last season for the Spiders, 19 relief appearances, 4-2, 41 IP, 4.61 ERA 23k/11BB.

Fun Fact - Gruber's Neosho Kansas Juco team played against Cooper Nicholson's Iowa Central team in 2024....Nicholson went 1-8 in the two games...Gruber did not pitch in those games, but threw 81 innings that year with 60Ks against 15BB.

Interesting starter for Richmond. On one hand, he was th starter for the season-opener…so their “Friday night guy”…which makes it interesting that he’d throw against us midweek (Richmond chasing RPI opportunities). But then, based on last year’s info, he was a reliever and perhaps he still is and was used as an “opener” last Friday and will be again today. Regardless…we need to rough him up and we need to keep dealing from the bump.

Tommy…just to confirm (again)…both Cam and Olin are healthy, correct? Really thought they’d have seen action last weekend (or would have been the starters in the two midweeks this week).

Couple of reasons it could be Percival over Seagraves and Johnson:
1: Coming off season ending injury, get Percival in controlled/prepared settings (warmup etc.) first few times out before going to the pen as our main lefty (projected role last year, need a shutdown lefty pen arm)
2: OJ and Seagraves will be important bull pen guys with strikeout stuff. Mathias is coming back from injury, and pen has to replace Lynch/Boaz/Boltons appearances/innings (57/ approx 80 innings) and we had Knapp going 7+ in 9 starts... will probably see Boaz and Lynch handled conservatively (not allowed to pitch out of trouble past the 5th).

So total, looking at replacing 100ish pen innings. OJ should be able to go from 30 to 50ish innings with more consistent strike throwing. Seagraves flashed, but walks hurt, can go from 23 to 50 ish innings hopefully. And I don't think we can rely on McDuffie for much more out of the pen (28 app/55 IPs)

So 65 innings between:
Matthijs for a full season (18 last year---- project to 50 if healthy) +30
Chmielewski.. (10 last year to 25 this year is a projectable goal) +15
Flannery (1 last year .... 20 this year?) +20
Glauber and Holiday got an appearance weekend 1

?? so far: Rose (Fr/LHP), Cackovic (Fr./RHP), Mabe (Fr. RHP), Leatherman (RsFr, RHP), Hurley (Fr. RHP), Rich (Fr. RHP), Lawson (RsFr, LHP), Wallen (RSFr. RHP)

Judging by years past:
SP: Decaro, Boaz, Lynch
4/5 SP: Percival and then development guy (Seagraves/Padgett and which ever Freshman projects as a future starter).

Firemen: McDuffie, Matthijs
Trusted Relief/Long Relief: Padgett, OJ, Seagraves, Flannery
First Freshmen: Holiday, Glauber
Lefty: Chmielewski

Fun fact: the Richmond 2nd baseman, Michael Elko is son of Aggie football coach (we know how I feel about the Aggies, hook 'em always) Michael Elko

Efficient inning for Percival's first appearance since March, a 4-3, F8 and a foul out to third

Maginnis with another solid play going back on a ball to the track to end the 2nd. Was worried about his defense being a 3B/LF recruit from Ga State, but has looked solid through 3+ games so far.

not sure he's the kind of athlete we need going for steals, though

Probably testing some things early in the season and may have thought they'd get a breaking ball on an 0-2 count but I hate running into outs with nobody out, especially when we're hitting lasers off the dude.
