Hi everyone! I’m planning to get my book published and wanted to hear from the community. I’ve come across several book publishing companies Houston and am curious about which approach works best for new authors. Should I try traditional publishers, self-publishing, or maybe a hybrid route? I’d love to hear your experiences and any advice on choosing the right path for a first-time author.

Subject? Trim size? Page count? Hardcover or trade? Book jacket? One color inside? Print run?

Unless you are doing a print run over 2,500 - 5,000, many times it is best to go to an on-demand printer like Ingram's Lighting Press (Nashville) and Publishers Group West (San Francisco). You can do short runs as low as 100 copies.

These companies all have publishing, marketing, and distribution services. It really depends on the book whether you go to a traditional publisher.

Example, if you have a regional book, have some retail connections, and can self-promote, it might be a good option rather than just collecting a royalty check from a publisher.

Beware the Vanity Press route. If anyone wants money from you run away as fast as you can! You can submit a finished manuscript to traditional publishers but the odds of them even reading it are slim to none. I’ve self-published 3 books and helped others do the same. If you’re writing the book to make money…chances are it ain’t gonna happen. It’s easy to write the book and self-publish via Ingram or KDP but selling it to make money is a whole other discussion. Self satisfaction of getting it done and into book form can be reward enough for many. Good luck.

Write a book about trannies. Seems to be the only thing publishers think is worth publishing these days.
