Pope needs to think outside of the box and bring in Pat Riley as our basketball gm. He's now 80 years old, so he may consider coming back to Lexington. Also his net worth is over $100 million so if his heart desired, he'd take less money. I can't help but think how much he would help us with recruiting.

What in the world would make you think Riley would want to do that?

Not a chance in hell.
I mean Lexington isn't exactly a bad place to retire. Maybe he'd want to finally get out of Miami and settle somewhere relaxing for the rest of his career and life. All I'm saying is it would be worth a call to feel him out.

I mean, think about. You're getting old, on New Circle Road, and you get lost. What's the worst that can happen? Rediscover yourself in 30 to 45 minutes?

If you think Lexington is a great place to retire at an older age compared to Florida, then I don’t know what to tell you. Really perplexing statement.

I’m sorry, but you are truly deluded if you think Riley would give up his perfect life in Miami to come live out his retirement in Lexington.

The fact that he looked down on KY and only came back because he had to might throw a cog in this wrench.

The guy has spent most of his life in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. I don't feel like he would feel at home in Lexington, Kentucky. He's also 80 years old, which is pushing senile age. I doubt he would want to start a different kind of job that also deals with teenagers.

The man can literally "retire" anywhere in the world as even the modest assesments of his net worth are north of 80 million. Yet, you think he wants to come to Lexington, KY to live out his days as the GM of a college team during the early stages of the complete shitshow of unrestricted NIL. :ROFLMAO:

Also, Riley is one of the greatest NBA presidents of all time. It's like saying in 2007 that Mitch should think outside the box and bring in Gregg Popovich as the head coach.

As someone who has lived in multiple big cities across the country, I would love the opportunity to come back to Lexington if the opportunity presented itself. But that's just me

But Riley’s not from Lexington (or Ky). He’s a native New Yorker who just attended UK around 60 years ago, and never showed much interest in returning thereafter. In fact, to my knowledge, I believe he only returned once (for the Rupp’s Runts 60th anniversary ceremony).

The notion that he’d now be pining to live out his retirement in Ky is laughably ridiculous. Especially considering how awesome his life in Miami is.

If pat Riley is coming to Lexington it needs to be to run the athletic department. That’s not happening either.

If we're going to shoot for the moon I say we go after the greatest NBA GM of all time...Red Auerbach!
Yes, I know my plan isn't flawless as Red isn't quite as alive as he used to be but no plan is perfect.

Everyone is acting like we shouldn't even try but what does it hurt? I see replies stating that he doesn't like UK and only came back once because he had too. That's total BS. I happen to know he is a big donor of UK and has been back many times, often stating his love for the program and what it meant to him. Hell he's even given pregame locker room speeches about this that one can find on YouTube...

See, now you’re just making up BS because you don’t want to admit that you started a dumb thread.

I’ve been closely following UK basketball for nearly a half century and can only remember him returning once, and that was this year for the RR 60th anniversary ceremony. When were these other “many times“ that you supposedly recall?

And I dare you to provide a link backing up your claim that he’s a “big donor.” Because I’ve never heard that claimed before today.

Here is him in Rupp in the 90s for one...

As for him being a donor, I can assure you he is but that information is not public

OK, I’ll give you credit for finding one other( but your second link is in Miami). And it’s a good find. Forgot about that 90s visit.

But only two visits in around 60 friggin years hardly suggests someone looking to live there.

Fair enough. And I'm not saying he'd even consider it. But isn't it worth a call?

Wait a second, are you actually being serious? I legitimately thought you were being silly. I even got a good chuckle out of the original post. You’re not serious though I don’t think. Well done.

There is zero percent chance he would spend more than a few nights in Lexington. I bet he flew back as soon as the Rupp’s runts game was over. He is not leaving Miami for any other job in American.

As someone who was in Miami just last month and has been many times, everyone here is acting like it's paradise. It's hot as hell during the summer and the traffic sucks. The people are also overly pretentious. It's not a great place to retire in my honest opinion. And I'm sure he's getting tired of the NBA grind...

You know the guy has lived in fantastic places, right? Miami or Lexington? Not really a choice. I would take him as coach, even at 80, though.

I don't find it comforting the only answer this country has anymore is to get the 80 year old to do it. Like, respect your elders and all that but surely to god we can find people younger than 80 to accomplish things.

I’ll tell ya what though, I’ll take the greats at 90 running everything over boomers down. Those people damn, they just had the touch.

I’d take Riley for sure but anyone thinking Riley would take a role like that isn’t familiar with Riley.

I love Riley but at the rate the sport is changing and the energy it takes to keep up, we need someone younger who has a pulse on the landscape. He has connections no doubt but college basketball is evolving into a young(er) man's game now.
