I’m glad they did. Give him money and let’s see what happens. Maybe it doesn’t work but I hope it does. Incredible to post this after a win.
Why is it incredible to post? It’s late Feb and we’re 3-11. Of the three this is our first win not needing ot. They’ve all been at home. All bottom feeders. Maybe he just feels if Pike was that good after six year why are we so bad now. And all the decline wasn’t during Covid either. I agree with your “let’s give him money now and see what happens”, and I too hope it works out. But if you’re glad we gave him such a cushy contract that just seems to say you like the product now?

I like Pike and think he will be good with more money. I might be wrong and without that contract he’s probably gone before we find out what he can do with money.

And it just strikes me as odd to be so mad still after a win.

It’s easy to forget at the time - He had beaten #1 away. Had the team 9-3 and ranked (and probably 10-2 if the refs at OSU paid attention). Had just gotten a commitment from Ace and was likely to get a commitment from Dylan.

Contract was justified. Lifetime contracts are dumb, no matter the coach, see Calipari.

If I’m not mistaken it was a top 10-20 contract nationwide at the time. No sweet 16, no final 4, and we all agree Hobbs was off his rocker as an AD. I don’t know if justified is fair. An extension sure but it was pretty extreme.

You’ve gotta pay him to keep him off the market.

Based on what he had accomplished at the time - 3 straight NCAA births (I count 2020) at at a school that sucked for 3 decades, a top 20 team when everyone was expecting a decline with Ron and Geo leaving, and getting top recruits to Rutgers (Ace, Dylan, Gavin) he was going to be an attractive candidate elsewhere (see Greg to Miami, Michigan) and get paid.

NIL has changed the game. We need to catch up.
There’s no certainty Pike can adapt to the new landscape, but the school hasn’t adapted either. Let’s get some NIL money and see if he can. We should know better than most it’s not easy to find a coach who can win.

How about just having a winning record?

Come on man, the contract isn’t made with knowledge of the future.

I’ll give Pike a pass on 23-24 because he lost 3 starters in April and the top 30 prospect was a bust. He deserves criticism for underperforming with Ace and Dylan.

As I said above, he needs to show he can adapt - but the school also needs to get back to a (somewhat) level playing field with NIL.
