What has this ex-Politician done for major college athletics since coming into office? It's a lot worse off from when he started. Empty suit and predictable.

That's a legitimate question.

For the sake of getting that question started I goggled his name

Since taking office in March 2023, NCAA President Charlie Baker has focused on modernizing college sports by navigating the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) landscape, negotiating the landmark House v. NCAA settlement for revenue sharing, and pushing for federal, uniform NIL regulations. He has championed increased direct financial benefits for athletes, enhanced health, and academic support.

NCAA President Charlie Baker has received mixed reviews, often lauded for trying to modernize the NCAA through lobbying Congress for NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) regulation and protecting athlete well-being, while facing criticism regarding the slow handling of transfer portal chaos and eligibility issues. He is actively pushing for the elimination of prop betting and challenging the re-entry of former professionals into college sports.
Key Aspects of Baker's Impact on College Basketball:
  • Player Eligibility & Pro Re-entry: Baker has taken a firm stance against players who have already signed professional contracts returning to play college sports, arguing that it compromises the amateur, student-athlete model. He has faced criticism from some who feel the NCAA is not acting fast enough to define eligibility rules in the NIL era.
  • Betting & Safety: A major focus of his tenure is protecting student-athletes from harassment, leading to his campaign to ban prop bets on individual college athletes, supported by the Big Ten.
  • NIL and Transfer Portal: Baker is navigating the "transfer portal" era, acknowledging the need for more stability while trying to address the chaotic nature of NIL, which has been criticized as making college sports resemble minor leagues.
  • Political Action: Leveraging his background as a former politician, Baker is heavily lobbying Congress for federal legislation to provide stability in college sports.
His effectiveness is often debated, with supporters praising his proactive, policy-driven approach to complex modern problems, and critics calling for faster, more decisive action to curb the perceived "mess" of NIL and the transfer portal.

NIL...cant figure how any sane person put this out as a way to pay players, cause lets face it, few players' N I or L is worth a dime.

Rev sharing is a rational alternative. Put in real enforceable rules. Shed light on terms of a player's committment. Make schools know they are not f'ing around with the enforcement. Set limits by sport. Sensible limits on transferring.

Maybe this guy can act on some of these obvious issues and start saving a great sport..

What’s he supposed to do. Every rule put out is challenged in local state courts.
That is a key part of a bill the sen from missou is proposing, a nationwide statue agreed to by congress. No more searching for an agreeable judge.

He's paid over $3 Million per year. He's been there 3 years, and the college sports scene is more confused than ever. I don't care what the challenges have been but he's made no progress in making it better.

For 3M a year he should be able to figure it out.
What does that mean? The NCAA plus the P4 having been trying to put rules around this stuff for five years. Everytime they try to implement common sense rules, some local judge grants an injunction.

Biggest issue is the NCAA's insistence that NIL and revenue sharing are NOT pay for play. Call it what it is and have real play for pay enforceable contracts. In the absence of that, NIL and revenue sharing results in licensing agreements which do not bind a player to a program. Classify players as employees, have collective bargaining agreements, etc.

He got appointed with a very good salary to work with elected officials to fix this mess. Not to sit back & blame local judges.

That's the common knock on him from his detractors. Great ideas with few results.

Two bills on campus liege athletics have been introduced in congress with no action taken. They don’t want to get involved With this mess.
