Saw this on my facebook page: if you could bring back any former gamecock football player to play next season who would it be and why?

Since we have Sellers and I think he can play better with some semblence of a OL, I will add Travelle Wharton to the team, at LT,

Started 45 of 47 games at USC and never game of a sack after his second game of his freshman season, would play 10 years in the NFL, as he was pretty good!

Sterling Sharpe.

With all due respect to Rogers, Clowney, Lattimore, Shaw, Grantz, etc......Sterling was the single greatest player to ever put on the garnet & black.

Yep, for the most important position on the team, he did the one thing that matters more than anything else: win.
The defense had a lot to do with those wins. Solid QB, but he wasn't the type to go out and just win a game for you. One of the best QBs we have had at SC, but we have never had an upper echelon QB. I have to go with Senior Year Sharpe as some other posters have said. Only player at Carolina that I was expecting something big to happen every time he touched the ball.

1. Derek Watson
Squeaky? Guy was an athletic freak, but did dumb stuff like fumbling & dancing and getting dropped for losses.
There's bunch of RBs I'd pick ahead of him that could help us win games.
Marcus, Brandon Bennett, Big George, Kevin Long, Cory Boyd, Mike Davis 28, Rico, Rocket Sanders, Troy Hambrick....

Mmmm, gotta disagree there podner. Post was for next season; I’ll take the home run. ‘Fumbling and dancing’ is a one-liner that could apply to any of those you list. Fwiw, my son had a game on YouTube at his house this past weekend, don’t remember who, I wasn’t really watching, but we fumbled late and the announcer commented that that pretty much sealed the game. The fumbler? Lattimore. Part of the game; home runs ain’t.

But he did just that v. Mizzou in '13. There's a reason his teamates put him on their shoulders after the game. Mizzou was playing @ home and ranked in Top 5. Huge win!
1 comeback in 3 years starting does not make a great QB. Sellers has done that. I don't think anyone is calling Sellers a great QB right now.

Ryan Succop. Mr. Automatic from almost any distance. Even if the team were terrible next year, all they would need to do is get it to the other team's 40 and we could get 3 points....

This is nuts!

Only 2 RB should ever be chosen over Derek Watson, & they are George Rogers & Marcus Lattimore.....& Lattimore could be debated, as Watson was more of a HR threat.

You guys mentioned a lot of good ones. So let me throw a wild one out there. How about Andrew Province or Roy Hart. Either of those would bring a lot of talent to a position in need -- DL.

It didn't end well here for Squeaky, but he seemed like the only player we had during Holtz' early years and he was a key piece in the turnaround. Did Kickoffs, caught the ball out of the backfield, whatever you need. Gets underrated due to the discipline issues.

I would take Roy Hart in a skinny minute, but if I had to pick a DL, I'm taking Travian Robertson.

I don't think Shaw lost a home game as a starter. That is pretty darn good in my book. Mentioning Sellers and Connor in the same conversation is silly.

The team didn't lose a home game. I appreciate you pumping up the guy. However, Shaw never threw for more than 2500 yards in a Steve Spurrier offense. Shaw was good for us, but never on an All-SEC Team. You telling me Tanneyhill, Wright, or Ellis couldn't have won with the defenses we had from '10 to '13. That's your player. If you want to bring him back you can, but there have been more dynamic players at other positions here. QB is not the position people think about when you talk about Gamecock football.

Crediting Shaw without mentioning Clowney. Quarles, Ingram, Hampton, Lattimore, Jeffrey, Ingram, Skai Moore, Ellington, Sanders, Byrd. Shell, and Cann is what is silly imo. Put Rattler or even Sellers in that lineup and I like my chances. Put Shaw on last year’s team….

Did Shaw play a down in a single regular NFL game? Isn't that what the op was about? George Rogers led the NFL in rushing his rookie year and nobody wants him back?

I'd probably choose to bring back Sterling, but I'd be really tempted to see what Clowney and Stewart could do to QBs next year.

If I were building a team made up of former Gamecocks, I would absolutely make Big George the first pick, but given the OL challenges of our current team, I'm not sure we'd get maximum benefit from him. But, I don't know, was he a good pass blocker?

Demetris Summers May have been the best back I ever saw in high school....

Easy: Connor Shaw. Why? He won games. He had the "it" factor at QB.

(Yes, I know this will be irresistible bait for the "Shaw wasn't a good QB crowd")
The only mistake I remember him committing was the game at LSU after we had thumped Georgia at home. It was a first down play and he forced a ball at the sidelines and it was picked off. He was great for winning games though.

That's not his only one dude. You can do better than that. The guy wasn't known for having to make big comebacks, he was known for moving the chains and making smart plays which won us a lot of games.

He couldn't hold Watson's jock.
Duce? Seems you have selective memory.
Duce was a damn fine back & darn near carried the team in '96. We'd have been better than 6-5 had he not had a high ankle sprain in the latter part of the year. Had a good NFL career. However.......he was not the RB Derek Watson was. Watson was just a damn fool. Had he had a decent head on his shoulders, he'd have had a 10+ year NFL career.

Name one player on our current offense who would be a starter on our offense when Connor Shaw was QB. Shaw's supporting cast was head and shoulders above what Sellers has to work with.

Applies to defense as well. Those were some badass teams.

I think if you go WR, just a WR is not as big a play by play factor, I would go Alshon, he was uncoverable!! But I do pick, would have to Shaw, or maybe Clowney.
