Koch and Fulgerious need to get way more consistent. One game they are good and the next pretty much non existent... And Yes to whoever said play Tate Sage more!!! Also still wondering what happened with Howard... dude was playing good earlier in the season and now passes every time he touches the ball and has played some soft D since the Indiana game...

Some of Ben's comments from the postgame radio show:

"We didn't guard anybody. Our defense was horrendous. We missed a lot of wide-open, point blank threes, and that's going to get you."

"When [Stirtz] made that layup, goal-tend. I'm not talking about officiating -- that's a miss [by the officials]. You've got to call that. That's something that cannot happen for Bennett Stirtz."

"I'm disappointed for [Bennett]. He was desperately trying to carry the load for us. We just need other guys to show up."

Skp ahead to the 3:42:00 mark to hear Ben's thoughts.

Many of their blocks were fouls!

Ben can't be happy with giving up 17-24 (71%) from inside the arc (13 of the 17 made shots were layups).

And we got outrebounded 34-25, which shows a lack of toughness.
I saw several times where Maryland guy drives to the basket on the right side of the lane and no one in front of him. Meanwhile Iowa had 2 guys along the lane on the left side watching!?!? Why wouldn't they just take 2 long steps as Mary is driving and just stand there with arms up!????

Why wouldn't EVERYONE be ready to go.

Ben McCollum:

“I think you win enough games and you kind of think that you’ve arrived to a certain level. You forget that it’s still the Big Ten. It’s still a tough league. That’s part of it. I thought some of our guys were really ready to go. But it’s part of also building what we’re trying to build is the ability to be ready every single day. We’re just not there yet. That’s part of the build. It’s not going to just happen.”

Hayden Fry said similar things when he arrived, that one of his toughest jobs would be to "teach Iowa what it takes to win." In year three, way before the portal, Iowa won the BIG title and went to the Rose Bowl for the first time in 23 years. Fry went on to build the respected modern Iowa football program. I'm confident McCollom will get it done in basketball too.

That's absolutely criminal right there...
That's a fact. It not only was a foul, it was a flagrant one with severe contact to the head and neck. But they made up for it with ticky-tack and phantom fouls on Iowa . . .

This is one reason why officials should have to face the media postgame just as coaches and players do. Show that video of #45 racing the length of the floor and clobbering Stirtz in the head and neck and ask how three officials can miss it. They need to be put on the spot. It's hard to play and coach the game, but there is accountability there. Officials? None.

I didn't see this live but wonder if that was time and situation for Ben to get a T to maybe stir up the squad?

Did he mention why Tate only played 9 minutes? If he wanted someone besides Stirtz to show up and hit open 3's, why did he keep one of his best 3 point shooters on the bench? If he doesn't want people missing open 3's, why is he playing Koch 31 minutes? 3 points and zero rebounds on 1-6 shooting.

You can listen for yourself; the interviews in post #1 & post #35 are pretty short. ;)

Ben said they "weren't ready to go" for this game and the 2 previous games.

Regarding Bennett, Ben said "he's been ready every single day." Ben said he needs other guys to show up.

Said they needed to box out & play with an edge (only 3 did that, according to Ben; Bennett & 2 others, who he did not name).

Said it's hard to swallow that only 3 Hawks showed up to play.
Ben said to Gary & Bobby that he was trying to keep his mouth shut (when it comes to officiating & naming players' names).

Here are those 2 interviews, again:

Radio postgame: skip ahead to the 3:42:00 mark to hear Ben's thoughts.

Yeah; is it flagrant when you get an entire hip to your head? :(

IF so, should Bennett have been shooting FTs and Iowa gets the ball? So, it could have been a potential 6 (or 7 with a 3) point possession? Instead, we got 2 points.

Correct me if I am wrong.

After they reviewed that play, the basket counted, and they should have called a flagrant & Iowa should have gotten 2 FTs and the ball? So, that possession could have ended up in up to 7 points? Instead, we got just 2 pts out of it.

And the refs missed how how rakes across the arm?

Iowa was horrendous; but so were the refs.

Teams have to get there first. With Iowa's last 7 games, I don't think it is a foregone conclusion that they make the dance.
Brutal schedule coming up. One can only hope...

We better get our act together.

A lot more than 3 players (according to Ben) need to show up.

Wisconsin is playing better. OSU will come in on a Wednesday thinking they can knock us off. Playing at Penn State always poses problems.

Our last 7 games:

vs #13 Purdue (20-4)
Sat, Feb 14 4:00 pm FOX

vs #7 Nebraska (21-3)
Tues Feb 17 8:00 pm BTN

@ Wisconsin (17-7)
Sun Feb 22 3:00 pm FS1

vs Ohio State (16-8)
Wed Feb 25 8:00 pm BTN

@ Penn State (11-14)
Sat Feb 28 11:00 am BTN

vs #2 Michigan (23-1)
Thur March 5 7:00 pm Peacock

@ #7 Nebraska (21-3)
Sun March 8 4:00 pm FOX

Would have been the wrong time imo. We were down and the game was still 1 possession... after it got to 7 points he could went scorched earth and I would have been fine with that.

The problem is we have Stirtz for one year. We need to figure it out this year, then worry about rebuild next year.

At Purdue on Jan 14, we only got outrebounded 26-23.

Iowa can't allow this to happen (54-37 rebounding margin):

For home games you have several outlets covering the game, so for the postgame there is a conference room & several writers are throwing out questions.

Here was Tyler Tachman of the Register after the Oregon win; he, again, appeared to be the only Iowa beat writer making the trip out west (so, no zoom calls in either situation).

Damn no wonder tachman tore up his knee look at those shoes.

I think Iowa comes out with hair on fire and Carver is rocking vs. Purdue and we get another HUGE Q1 victory! In fact, @Franisdaman, I DEMAND it! (Still not sure how that crap on Stirtz wasn't called and then Wisky is called for a ridiculous foul at the end of that game...makes ZERO sense.)

In the quest for building (and sustaining) strong fan support at CHA, the Hawkeyes really need to deliver a big home win one of these days.
