With the makeup of this roster, containing the ball will always be the number one issue.

The fact that it hasn't been a bigger issue, to this point, is a testament to just how well-schooled the defense is.

Given a choice, I'm a high-paced guy, when it comes to basketball. But it can't be overlooked how much of a complimentary piece the deliberate offense has been for the D.

Zone will not be happening

Recruit some rim protectors and that **** goes bye-bye quickly.
Not really.

Rim protectors are rare and expensive. That leaves less money for quickness on the perimeter.

The result is probably a rim protector in a lot if foul trouble.

Well-schooled quickness on the perimeter amounts to paint protection.

Hopefully some success in the program will bring more athletiscm

I think Ben gets this and will be going for a big in the portal. We just sucked tonight. It happens.
Not sure about that.

Ben wanted bigs for this season. Too expensive.

I think most of Iowa's bigs going forward, will be high school recruits that get developed

Too bad. I think you are right. I just think a change up is good at times . Even a great fastball pitcher needs a change up to keep the batter honest.

I didnt say we will get one but I'm guessing that is his top priority.

I didn't say Iowa won't get a big.

Top wish? Sure.

But I'm guessing not the top "priority".

The entire roster is the top priority. Landing a big wasn't enough of a priority last summer to overpay for one

Wish ben would try a zone . At least do it for a few possessions to give a different look.
Maryland learned from their first meeting where they kept getting to the basket in the 2nd half after Iowa jumped out to that big lead.

They went for broke and just kept driving to the basket and Iowa either couldn't stop them or would get called for fouls.

Fortunately, we shot MUCH better that night and won comfortably.......which ended up being a bit of fool's gold given what we've seen lately.

I do hate zone defense, or at least the over-reliance on it, but there is a middle ground to it as well. You also can't be so stubborn as to completely refuse to play zone when you have a team/players that would benefit from it, and it would serve to keep opposing offenses honest, especially when your man to man is struggling.

I agree though, Ben is not gonna have this team play zone.

Wouldn't have to play 'zone' per se. You can gap those players when you have a quickness deficiency against drivers, or encourage those who are 'iffy' from distance to give it a try and not let high pct layups in the lane beat you. At least until you get roster upgrades in place.

This is pretty much what they've been attempting

Stirtz can’t play tough defense because he’s needed to much on the offensive end. And he’s playing 40 minutes with the ball in his hands which is insane in today’s day and age but it’s probably our best chance of winning. And he’s not changing. What Ivdont understand is playing so close to your man 25 feet from the basket with the floor spread. Almost nobody can keep your man in front in that situation. Is what it is. We had won 6 in a row and last night was just a bad night. We’re just not very talented and we can’t afford to shoot that poon the road and expect to win. We’ve got to get at least 1 of these next 2. We need some big wins.

Three Maryland guys we could not force to use off hand, and the help did not come soon enough.

I think the theory is to never let the offense feel comfortable. If the offense always feels hounded, then even open shots feel rushed. Someone who shoots 60% on free throws can probably shoot 80% in practice when they aren’t tired. Theory is to make the offense earn every inch of space they can find, and that will wear on them.

They did a lot of double screens at the top of the key. Rubbed off those screens.
