The new thread about the best QBs on each Big 10 team starting in 2000 made me think about Banks v. Tate v. Stanzi v. CJB

In that thread, Banks is #1 but maybe Stanzi does deserve it. You all remember the run the hawks went on when Stanzi was made starter half way through 2008. Starting with the 3 pt loss to MSU on Oct 8 2008 to the end of the season they went 6-2 with two 3 pt losses on the road.

Then 2009 had the 9-0 start, Stanzi got hurt so 2 very close losses, but then they beat Minny and win the orange bowl for an 11-2 record.

Then 2010 start 7-2 with the late loss in the desert and the dreaded fake punt 1 point loss to Wisky. That season ended with some scratching head late losses and defensive injuries but:

In the time period above they were 24-6 and what a winning clip. And all 6 losses were very close while the hawks were blowing teams out.

This was another great 3 year period in Hawk football under Kirk (which sort of makes you wonder about 2007 and 2012 but just blips)

Also, Stanzi was one of those Kirk QBs who got better as his INT rate went way down his SR year with 3000 yds 25 TDs and only 6 INTs.

And yet in that 9-0 start Pick six Rick threw a bunch of pick sixes, yet they never lost a game he threw a pick six in. His great statistical numbers his last year did NOT lead to the team winning more. Kind of an anomaly really. That 2010 team had some locker room issues with some of the upper classmen and the whole DJK drug house deal.

Yeah, the 2010 team had an offensive guard go down who was replaced by a 260 lb backup center and opposing teams attacked that spot plus top MLbkr Tarkanian hardly played which hurt throughout the season. And Adam Robinson concussion hurt late in the year.

I think the problems were deeper than that. Remember the whole DJK suspension for living in a "drug house", and then one of our starting DL failed a drug test at the combine and dropped in the draft. The team did not seem "on the same page" and dropped some games that seemed unlike them. There was talk of some dissension in the locker room even amongst the upper classmen. I think there was the DJK supporter group and the others who were not happy about some of the crap going on OFF the field.

The loss to a 3-9 Minny team is somewhere in the worst losses in program history. That was a terrible team. DJK was the only guy who showed up to play that day. Very disappointing season that was somewhat salvaged by beating Mizzou in the bowl game.
