You don't watch the NBA but you're posting clips of NBA games with plays where you don't like the officiating. Which one is it?

It’s gather step nonsense. Their rule book damn near eliminated traveling.

If we ever start hearing “gather step” in the college game, we’re cooked as fans.

I don’t know what the excuse is for all the moving screens. I do my best to overlook it, because players are so freakin skilled these days, and I wanna see em in action.

Just really wish they’d clean it up. Nobody wants to see hand checking rock fights, but they over corrected in favor of the offense.

I will forward your post to Adam Silver, I'm sure he's sorry to hear you no longer watch and will make the appropriate changes to regain your viewership. Never mind the fact that the league is sitting near all time highs in both attendance and revenue.

I haven’t looked lately but for real? Last I looked it was horrid numbers. Guess it was a few years ago.

Can’t find anyone who watches the NBA. Gambling is probably the reason.

**edit - oh revenue. Well yea but every sport is making me than ever before. viewership over the last 10/15 is way down.

2023-2024 was an attendance record for the league and last year revenue was close to $13 billion, which I believe was a record. Raw viewership numbers might not be what they used to be in the US, but there are other ways to make money and the league is more international than it's ever been. The new TV deal they just signed that started this year is massive.

LMAO I don’t see how this could even be possible. The NBA is a garbage product and idk anyone that watches it currently.

I've been reading every version of this board since the days of Tubby and posters throughout the years seem to be more anti-NBA than other fanbases. The NBA isn't my thing but I don't believe the entire product is "garbage." That's just an opinion. Officiating may not be great and guys get away with more these days because fans enjoy high scoring, up-and-down games but garbage? I dunno, I'd rather watch a game where UK beats Bama 101-96 over some of those awful UK/UofL rockfights with Pitino and Cal.

Looking only at recent NBA Finals ratings, they appear to be stable. They were higher in the 2010s but we hadn't fully embraced streaming yet. Lots of ways to watch sports now.

The NBA is more international than it's ever been, so whatever the league has lost in domestic TV viewers they've made up that and more internationally. But still, strong attendance does show the league still popular domestically. The top 3 in MVP voting last year are all from other countries. You can make the argument the top 5 players in the league are all international (Shai, Luka, Wemby, Giannis, Jokic). That really drives numbers overseas.

It’s better than College where kids transfer every single year chasing dollars. No loyalty. I get getting paid, but there has to be contracts. Sit out when you are cleared? Don’t get paid. It’s really just a circus of mid level- non NBA talent- gaming the system.

To be honest I’m not sure I really know a single die hard NBA fan. I also don’t know any college bball diehards either honestly. Seems we live in a football country. As a big basketball fan however, I do find NBA games extremely boring to watch in the regular season. Seems everyone has the same style of play and it’s not really compelling.

It’s garbage when you consider what basketball is supposed to be. They have totally rewritten the rules of the game in favor of high scoring offenses. Transport officials from the 80’s or 90’s to today’s nba game and there would be very little scoring as a walk or carry would be called on almost every possession.

The NBA has some incredibly athletic players but, as the OP pointed out, there are so many bad things they get away with that it hardly resembles the game I loved so much before. I almost never watch an NBA regular season game and just mostly keep up with how UK guys are doing. I used to be a huge Celtics fan so I might watch a little of them during the playoffs as the playoffs seem to be a little more watchable. But, if the NBA went out of business tomorrow I wouldn't miss it one bit. Still like the college game better though we have our own problems there these days too.

Nothing "skilled" in that video.

College basketball has become more lax too, no where near the level of the NBA though. I notice players switching and lifting their pivot feet regularly.
I don’t like it at all, because it hurts the integrity of the sport. Offensive numbers are inflated as the offensive player has every single advantage given to him.
I played a lot of basketball in my younger days and I always knew when I travelled. The rule becomes instinct whenever you’re forced to play by it. I understand that the powers that be realize that offense draws eyeballs, but at some point it becomes a joke, and isn’t true or fair to the game.

Well said, which is why I quit watching years ago. Offensive player can do what he wants and the defense responds by putting their hands all over their man trying to keep them from driving. Refs allow way too much contact and like you said it’s ruining the integrity of the game.

Compared to the 80s and 90s it is most definitely a garbage product.

They have bastardized the rules to the point where it’s no longer real basketball in my opinion. And the sad thing is college is following suit

It’s two different discussions. The rules and the enforcement thereof suck.

But the combo of sheer size and skill is crazy. Have you seen Wemby play? It’s awesome

This kind of thing is often cyclical. The (sometimes literal) slugfest style in the 80s and early 90s was itself a far cry from the original vision for the game, and even from the couple of decades that came before it. What those who grew up watching that era and now have nostalgia for it sometimes forget too is that such a style wasn’t even close to universally popular then, and the Pistons were villains for carrying it as far as they did.

That being said, I do feel like there’s been an overcorrection in recent years. While there’s no doubt some amazing shot makers, practically making dribbling optional when they’re getting where they want to shoot from cheapens it quite a bit. Hopefully the pendulum will swing back at least a little bit and cut down on some of that soon.
