Well it has been many years since RU played at UCLA. In 1979 NBC set up a nationally televised game with us at UCLA. James Bailey was coming off an incredible junior season and that is the main reason NBC set it up.

JB picked up 3 quick fouls and we trailed big in the 1st half.

On a play that they called Kelvin Troy out of bounds, I jumped off the bench and said "he was not out of bounds!". The referee, Booker Turner, gave me a technical foul. If we would have lost by 1, Tom Young would have made me walk back to NJ.

There is more to the story about Al McGuire becoming my friend on that trip.

Best of Luck,
Groz

I remember RU upsetting UCLA my freshmen year in Dec. 1981 at the Meadowlands. IIRC, UCLA was under investigation for giving cars to some of their stars and the students all jingled their car keys on every foul shot.

I remember watching that game on TV. Al McGuire was pretty complementary towards RU despite the fact they didn’t have a great game. What annoyed me was Kiki Vanderweghe’s post game interview where he pretty much scoffed at RU - I rooted against him for life after that

Al McGuire both my favorite all-time college basketball coach and my favorite color commentator.

Chris Remly top of the key 3 for the win.

Was at that game. Me and my buds were yelling “No!” when he shot the ball - but instant euphoria when it went through. 😂
Announcers for the Notre Dame game were clearly favoring ,ND
When Remley got the ball for an open shot at the end, you could hear the announcer say Uh-oh

No shot clock and no 3-point shot. Such a different game then.
Ah...the no shot clock days. Anybody else still remember the Kentucky-Cincinnati game back then, where Cincinnati held the ball for the whole friggin game...with Kentucky winning 12-6 ? It was clear proof that a shot clock was definitely needed.

Dean Smith deployed the four corners to defeat Rutgers at the garden. Forget the year. Maybe 79 also?
