Can anybody explain why KJ basically hasn’t been playing at all and then suddenly when we are down 45 points or so he’s out there? I figured maybe he told CC he was going to transfer and don’t play me, so was shocked when I saw him on the floor. Makes zero sense. Especially on a team that can’t shoot 3’s to save their lives.

Lou- have you ever asked Collins about KJ? At the end of last season he was one of our better players

I believe he had already played enough this year that he had lost the year so not playing him would not get that year back unless he could get medical waiver

Here we go again. KJ hasn’t done anything at all when he has played. He isn’t going to see the floor unless we are getting killed. He looked lost out there last night ( he wasn’t alone) and let’s say the effort didn’t appear off the charts. There is no reason to play him when he isn’t in next years plans.

Purple Pile Driver basically explained it in his reply. KJ is not going to play unless NU is down 30 -- or up 30, I suppose, if that ever happens.

Collins has been asked many times about KJ and dances around the answer because, I imagine, he doesn't want to talk negatively about the kid. The bottom line is that they don't trust him out there.

I hear and read that a lot -- that KJ was one of NU's better players last season. But remember, he only played substantial minutes at the end of the year, after Brooks and Leach went down and they really didn't have a choice. With the influx of guards this year (Reid, West, Green, Gill), I figured he would be the odd man out -- though I didn't think he would go almost a month without playing at all.

Personally, I would be surprised if he doesn't transfer at the end of the year. It just hasn't worked out for either side.

It wasn't "substitute minutes" the last portion of the year - he led the team in scoring one night. And odd man out among that group of guards including one a freshman who really never plays? No.

I said substantial minutes, not substitute minutes. He did lead the team in scoring vs. Iowa, I think it was. But my point was that he was playing at the end of the year because of the injuries.

As far as the influx of guards, I was just listing them all. KJ has played more than Gill this season -- though Gill got off the bench first last night.

I have a memory of him almost single handedly beating Ohio State last year I think. Last year he played decent minutes early, then got into the doghouse, then came back late in the year and really shined. He showed skills that no one on the current team is showing this year, which is why so many of us are clamoring for him. I guess he just didn't develop over the offseason and maybe even regressed.

I heard from a reliable source that he had off the court issues and displayed poor judgment/work ethic this offseason. I also heard from another source that he had an ankle injury early this season.

Maybe the better question is how he keeps getting in the doghouse

You have to get out of the doghouse to get back in. I don't think he ever did.
Well apparently he was in it much of last year. I assumed he was out of it at the end of last year, Or did he never get out?

How can he possibly be a worse shooter from deep than Green? At least KJ showed at the end of last year he is capable of scoring from beyond the arc on a somewhat consistent basis. I’m not saying he should start, but it’s pretty wild that he can’t even get on the floor some nights on a team that as somebody else said can’t hit the broadside of a barn. At one point in the second half last night we were at 6.5% from 3.

And I’d say he’s 100% going to transfer

I’d say Gill is little more than a walk-on level talent who has a scholarship at this point

#2 Michigan on their home court is destroying Penn State by 40 in the same manner half way thru the 2nd half, now 85-44. The top BigTen teams are really showing no mercy on the lower tier teams.

Margin of victory matters greatly in the NET. Especially for teams with massive ranking disparity like we did vs Illinois last night. That’s why Undie didn’t pull his starters. If you take your foot off the gas and “only” win by 10 at home your NET ranking slips.

I was going to speculate - he doesn’t look like he put on any muscle. So, the work ethic issue would make sense to me.
