"That's a big loss. The coaching staff knew it. I'm not sure if fans quite knew it."--Rob Brooks on how big of an impact it is losing Taylor MCabe

Iowa's Jan Jensen:

“While fan bases could think the sky's falling, I think we played two really good teams. I think we played them without arguably one of my best players, my best leader. And I'm playing a lot of young kids. They're playing against a team that could contend for the national title. And I love my team. I’ve got to get my team remaining confident. I’ve got to get them better. I’ve got to be better.”

UCLA head coach Cori Close on getting to know and coach against Iowa's Jan Jensen in 2 years in the Big Ten:

“Jan has become one of those people that I not only respect (and) I not only get better because I coach against her, but I look up to her because of the way in which she's led, especially following Caitlin Clark, and how she's blazed her own trail, and how she's done it in such a classy way. And so just really want to say that I'm really fortunate to be a colleague of Jan and Iowa is really fortunate to have her as their head coach.”

Didn't Izzo say that Iowa should not fire Lick? I don't trust opposition coaches any farther than I can throw them and I am not throwing this one more than a couple inches.

So basically what they're saying is we have nobody else that can shoot 3s at even a mediocre clip, thus forcing them to have to entirely rethink their offense since they have no "out" option now for an "inside-out" game...................neat.

McCabe had just the 4th best conference 3 point percentage on the team behind CCW, Stremlow. and Deal.

McCabe did a lot of little things that don't show up on the stat sheet. Watch the Mich St game. At the start she is in the right place for rebounds, stops passes to a player cutting to the basket, makes a great interior feed, and hits a big shot. Deal will do all this some day, It's just hard for a freshman to do all of this. The mental side of the game is important, and McCabe had a quick, sound mind due to her experience.

I agree with this. Her defense was excellent this year and she wasn't one to get rattled. I also agree that Deal isn't there yet in terms of the mental aspects. I still believe starting her over Stremlow who is much further along with that element of her game was a mistake, but that horse has left the barn.

There are NBA teams the shoot the 3 poorly. Sac town is one of the worst at under 35%. They have become unwatchable for me the last 2 years.

I have to admit that's exactly what I was thinking while reading what the UCLA coach said. But I'll also admit it isn't fair to think that. Jan is no Lickliter, that's for sure, and sometimes, maybe, those comments from opposing coaches are sincere and honest. The fact is Iowa is ranked #10 in the country right now and has beaten many of the best teams in the BIG. It's also true that UCLA has a veteran team, and Iowa is playing mostly a bunch of youngsters. Bottom line: Iowa can, and probably will, finish in the top 3 in the 18-team BIG. It has a shot to at least be in the BIG conference championship game. And, given the right match-ups, this Iowa team could reach the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament. None of that would be easy, but it is realistic.

I also believe this Iowa team, sans McCabe, needs to adjust its offensive strategy by setting more screens for three-point shooters, especially Chit-Chat, to name one adjustment. I think Jan also needs to demand the soft, silly passes stop and that possessions must be more highly valued. This team is its own worst enemy by playing tentatively and by committing so many unforced turnovers.

It's time for the coaching to show itself if Iowa is to make the most of this season. And it's time for the few veterans to step up and set the example. Let's see what these Hawkeyes are really made of.

I remember Taylor made 2 plays in 2 different games earlier in the season that sealed both wins.

Trust? That could be a personal problem.

Unfortunately Iowa (like the vast majority of teams), can’t afford to lose one of their stars to injury. They are not like the UConns and S. Carolinas that are stockpiled with 5 star players and can lose starters without missing a beat.
Lots of truth there. I really like Deals game and think she will be a future star. Was hoping she would develop a little faster before McCabe’s injury. That has not happened (consistently). I hope she and the other underclass gals, as a group, fill the void. Great opportunity for Stremlow. A great finish is still in the cards.

why are you so disrespectful in your posts when you disagree with other folks.

Sorry, didn't realize the rules where you could be disrespectful to people not on this forum, but not to people on this forum.

McCabe was in a serious shooting slump, I believe she was around 44-45% from 3 before it. And yes, she was a very steady player that did a lot of good things. Way better with the ball than Kylie and Stremlow and deal and Hannah. And made way less dumb passes

Good coaches adapt something the current coach has not figured out.

I think putting a "star" label on McCabe is a bit of a stretch. Senior leader? Key piece? Yes. There had been question of her even being a starter earlier in the season.
As far as my trust of the USC coach, maybe that was not the correct word.
I didn't compare JJ to Lick.
What I was saying is an opposition coach my not be completely truthful when praising another program hence the Izzo comparison.

The fact that Iowa fans and JJ herself are labeling TM a star and someone irreplaceable tells you how far the Iowa program ia from being elite. Just absurd:,
With all due respect sir…. Who the phuque are you to make this judgement??
You take your main outside threat away and force the game inside (where it is turn over prone) and you say her loss won’t affect the team’s overall performance? Your angst just makes no logical sense. Her loss is huge, especially to a young and inexperienced (but talented) team like Iowa. Sometimes these things take time to work themselves out…. And sometimes, they don’t work themselves out until next year.
Folks who claim Iowa is “an elite” program love to hear themselves talk. The program has never been elite… a couple of their players have been, though. There’s nothing “elite” about this year’s team… but it is solid and talented. The Celtics under Red Auerbach were elite. UCLA under Wooden was elite. Tennessee women’s basketball was once elite…
