She needs to hit the gym and work on her shooting and passing. Good news is she has shown flashes of how good she could be. Bad news is she was absolutely horrible as a starter during tough road games. Let’s see how she bounces back.

Players I wouldn’t mind see transfer:

Layla H
Emely R
Kenise
Teagan
Why would we want our freshman backup center to transfer?

I wouldn't mind it you transferred.

Hawks should win out from today in the regular season.

Plenty of time to fix the problems if JJ realizes what they are!

According to you anyway. lol

Most players that know they have no chance to see the court will transfer before their junior season, imo.
Or at least players that want more minutes.
Wetering, Lauren Jensen, and Megan
Meyer are some recent examples.

Jada apparently doesn't care if she plays.
Just enjoying a free scholly with no expectations. Great gig if you can get it.
One would think a HC that wants to win would purge the roster of non contributing juniors/seniors?

Do you think in today’s world you can have a roster of 12-13 players that all want to play? You’re ridiculous.

Things happen.

Iowa has lost Emily and now McCabe since the season started.
Those are two players expected to be significant contributors.

As a HC, you damn well better have 12-13 capable of contributing.
That, or be content being mediocre.

Or was your post an attempt at trolling?

Deal didn’t play well. JJ has no idea how to utilize her talent. Why would she stay at Iowa if the offense will be a half-court, pound it into the post, no transition game?
I feel like this is a contest for how many bad takes can be incorporated into a single thread.

One thing very obvious is she is not very fast/quick and her handles are not that great. It's puzzling how she can look like she did against osu then turn around and look like she did the last two. Hopefully she'll put in a ton of work in the off season and will look a lot different next year. I think she will

Her shot was falling against OSU. It wasn't the last 2 games. I think/hope you can simply blame a lack of experience on looking so bad on the road. She didn’t handle it well.

I beg to differ.

It's ok to realize there are a multitude of things that need improvement to go deep in the post season.
Substitution patterns and properly using fouls and timeouts are gonna bite this staff in the azz if they don't improve.

Ok boys and girls, get ready to toast me for this opinion. I feel that the most significant player in our push at tournament time will be Deal. Our inside game is good, our perimeter game a weakness without McCabe. We need a perimeter player who can get us 15-18 points vs tournament opponents. Although Addie has looked overwhelmed at times she has also shown glimpses of the type of player we need. I feel she is a better three point shooter than shown today and she is the one offensive player we have who can get the ball in the paint off the dribble and get a decent shot. Will she step up? Who knows but I believe Jan needs to push the issue a bit. Let’s not think about what she can’t do but focus on what she can do to help this team. I commented in another thread that I think McKenna will really help Addie’s game as we can then play a 4 out offense creating more space for driving and cutting.

Using UConn as a comparison is ridiculous, but you already knew that.

There's also the possibility JJ doesn't accept input from her assts. I don't know how else to explain some of the stuff we're seeing in games.
I don't understand how you come to the conclusions that you do? Do you actually think these players have nerves of steel and are not affected by hostile environments or that freshmen can take time to get comfortable in game situations? What will you do when and if Deal goes off again against Minnesota? How can you believe that the assistant coaches have no input?

And lastly, you don't have to explain what we're seeing in games, we are watching too!

Maybe it is just me but I felt like she already had pressure on her coming into these LA games where friends and family were probably there. Bad recipe for a freshman.

I really like Deal still. The glimpses have me excited and we just have to chill. She is not the only one throwing terrible passes or having ridiculous live ball turnovers. Until this problem is reduced, we will struggle against anyone.

Unfortunately, Washington will not be a Q1 or a ranked team after a loss today at home against the Illini.

I will admit I overanalyze.
It's just so frustrating for me to see the same, simple, correctable mistakes game after game.

Not keeping track of "fouls to give" at the end of a quarter drives me crazy. Bruins hit that 3 pointer just as the buzzer ends the 1st half and Iowa only had 3 team fouls.

Got you, I would overthink my own games and my children’s HS and college games also, it did me no good. Bottom line is Iowa got beat by a better team and they also got the breaks, like ghost fouls and traveling not called. Again not a damn thing I can do about it!

That is how Indiana ended up 0-9 to start conference play

Be careful what you wish for

You don't sound like a fan of Iowa wbb at all

Perhaps being a Maryland fan would suit you better. They buy a mostly new team each year

Perfect post. We need scoring. Addie when confident and getting playing time and the green light ... like Oregon 18 MSU 8 OSU 20
her contributions are the difference including getting out to some big leads. Jan should tell her we need 12-20 points from you.
Find a way, On this west coast trip we saw timid Addie. Trying not to do wrong. Playing not lose versus playing to win.
Jan she is a huge part of our ceiling. Let her play. Forget frosh mistakes.

It's also suprising that she was so highly rated as a recruit when she has athletic deficiencies--speed and quickness--that cannot be coached/developed.

One thing Deal could do in the offseason is lose weight. Shedding 10-15 pounds might help.

Chit-Chat is Iowa's best 3-point shooter. Jan needs to set screens for her so she can get more than a couple of shots a game. When they put a quick big on Chit-Chat, it shuts her scoring down, thus the need to burn the opponent with screens. Iowa's offense needs to be more diverse and, if I may borrow an apt phrase from Hayden Fry, scratch where it itches.

I’m surprised a freshman played poorly on the road
Deal ain't just another freshman. For one, Iowa has played more than 20 games, so she's not just a freshman anymore. For another, Deal came in as a 5-star recruit who was rated No. 9 in the entire country by 247Sports, No. 12 by ESPNW, and the #1 player in all of California. I think fans are justified in expecting far better performances from a player like that than what we saw vs. USC and UCLA.

Deal’s age contributed to her high ranking in two ways, IMO. It helped her be a force early at Mater Dei. But it also kept her from being invited to USA Basketball trials, where she could be competitively compared against her high-ranking peers. Deal was simply too old to be on the same age-group national teams as her class of ‘25 peers. After she later competed during McDonalds AA week against the other high rankers, ESPN moved her ranking to the bottom of the players who played in the McDonald’s AA game.

I agree she needs to loosen the leash some because some of our veterans are doing the same dumb turnovers. The only negative thing I will say is there's a decent difference if you watch a men's team Ben doesn't miss some of the small details that I think Jan is missing regarding fouls and timeouts etc. Ben is an amazing coach so probably not fair to compare her to him. But there are some areas where she could learn from him and make improvements.
