Hard to beat a team this good when Mast is a ghost. Not dogging Mast, because he’s clearly still not back to 100%. But he’s having a rough day.
I was worried about this one…this loss doesn’t have to be overly damaging, but it increases the pressure to avoid a disaster at Rutgers. It also turns the game against Purdue in an absolute must win.

6 points in first half were not from 3. A lot easier to score the way Illinois did. A lot easier to go cold shooting from 3 rather than keeping it up or needing 3s to win
Because we’re more of a perimeter shooting team. We’re not real big to where we can go inside much and draw fouls. Illinois and Michigan are big. Hence the discrepancy.

The disparity in how they call contact fouls 25 feet from the basket makes a difference. Also, a few pretty weak calls late in the game on traps and double teams in the backcourt.
However, Illinois was extremely strong in the paint on defense. That carried them throughout the game when NU finally got cold from outside.

It will be interesting to see how Underwood handles Boswell's return. He's a pretty good player, but Illini look like a better team with Wagler running the show. That kid is pretty unflappable.
Makes you wonder how much of the games some people actually watch doesn’t it. Illinois was at the basket a lot where there will be a lot of contact made.

Agree. While refs have some discretion on how the entire game is called, it should be called consistently.
That was not the difference in the game. Illinois has some height and they passed the ball very well against our double teams. They were too strong in the paint and made us score almost exclusively from outside.
Boswell played off the ball last year when KJ was there and is now (hardly playing) in the NBA. So I don't think it will change much except just give them a better defender out there.
