4 years at Rutgers, and now 4 in Miami.

I’d like to think that, somewhere, Chris Farley is smiling:

Not considered a draft prospect apparently
He is probably getting paid $1M base to return for another season at Miami, plus all of the other perks.

He’s not likely to be a high draft pick so staying for one more collegiate season makes sense.

Some of these guys who still have a shot in the league but are looking at non-guaranteed later round picks where the upside is league minimum while the downside is being cut and the likely outcome is the practice squad are far better off taking the guaranteed $1 M deal as long as they can. The old calculus was "is it worth playing another year for free to raise my stock and make more" whereas now you just get paid.

No brainer. Being a good college player pays well nowadays.

You have absolutely no way of knowing what his future earning potential is or that this would be his high water mark.
He has a mediocre shot to stick in the NFL and ever make more than this, which is why he’s staying. The odds he’ll ever make a million a year after that are so remote they can be said to be be nothing to a 99% confidence interval.

Maybe not but I can put up an educated guess, If he had a good shot at getting drafted high, do you think he would be coming back for an 8th year? And after this he will be what, 26? So even if he gets a shot at the pros. do you think pros will risk making him a high draft pick?? Sorry but have a hard time thinking it is likely it would be a big money shot and by the time he was up for a FA contract he'd be what? 30 or better with a pretty beat up body. NFL stand for Not For Long. Really think they would risk ponying up for a big contract under these circumstances?

So maybe he tries to get into a field based on his education. He's delayed getting started with that profession. Hard to think of a circumstance where someone would be offering him 7 figures anytime soon?

Look he could defy all of this and do fairly well, Just that at this point the odds are against it. Not saying he cannot make a decent living. Just a hard time seeing superstar salary any time soon

There are lots of ways to make money in America. Do you recall The Rock quit football after Miami and even his own father tried to talk him about of doing so to become a pro wrestler? Just one extreme example, but ignoring the NFL led to hundreds of millions for him (and lots of terrible movies).

Who knows what his earning potential is beyond football. But this one year deal makes a lot of sense for a linebacker with two major knee injuries.

Hope he makes the most of his two masters’ degrees in case the NFL doesn’t work out.
