is seems to me that we've somehow lost the plot when it comes to dealing with incarceration of criminals...How many times have we recently heard of repeat offenders offending again?
I know there's not an easy answer, some people screw up, serve their sentence and never go near a crime again..but others not so much.
We understand why you chose to highlight this particular crime but what you didn't highlight is the white on black murder committed in late 2025 that her son was somehow involved in. This was supposedly retaliation for that murder. Both are heinous.

Yeah, recidivism rates in the US are a tragedy, and for whatever reason the US has a 2-3x higher rate than our peer countries. I think it's somewhere around 70% of offenders in the US end up back in prison compared to ~30% of the rest of the first world?
I think Orange is the New Black provided excellent commentary on this point. We don’t rehabilitate people in this country, because it is not profitable.
I think for profit/privately operated prisons are down right evil. Investors profiting from the incarceration of other humans? Gross. There is zero profitability in providing prisoners with education and job training. Also our laws are set up so that people who were incarcerated have significant trouble finding employment AND have to pay for their parole soooooo.
with that said I think some laws/judges/courts are too lenient in releasing/sentencing violent offenders.
soooooo my suggestion on fixing it? If we are going to allow profit private prisons, then we need to make it profitable for them to rehabilitate/educate their prisoners, and we do this by establishing baseline rehabilitation rates for individual facilities. The facilities/companies that have “low reincarnation rates” receive more funding, those that have higher rates are funded less or lose their contracts.
we rehabilitate by providing education and job skills and rewrite our labor laws so that once a debt to society is paid by a non-violent offender an individual doesn’t have to disclose that the spent time in prison

Nice ideas, I’d be all for better efforts at rehabilitating with first time, non violent offenders. JMO but anyone who maliciously takes another persons life must repay that debt with their own life. Either by death or living the reminder of it behind bars where they no longer pose a threat. No sense in wasting anyone’s time or money trying to rehabilitate those
