MS State a potential “Super Team”. Granted I’m not trying to jynx us, but a lot of folks see this team as a Threat. And the great this is … this coaching staff, which is beyond proven … I can only see/hope they are a powerhouse. Is pitching the only question mark? Though, you’re bringing in a 17 ton of talent. But who has been a starter is the issue.

Pitching is a question. But looking at the offensive stats of the players we bring back & the transfers were bring in, it is insane.

On the pitching side, we lack an established "ace" but between Valincius, McPherson, Foster, Burns & Kirk, you gotta figure there's a good chance at least one, if not two of those guys emerge. At worst, we certainly have quality depth.

What I want to see is 3 high quality pitchers emerge with our Friday night guy being the one that you feel really good about getting a W if the offense helps out just somewhat.
Also would like to see all 3 be able to go consistently 5-6, - 7 innings occasionally and then have a high quality mid-closer and a shut down closer that can get 3-4 outs like Sims was most recently.
Good pitching beats good hitting most any game.

for the regular season, I like to see the Sunday guy be a high rate win guy, not saying he is your best pitcher, just that it helps to have enough depth that you're picking up that game consistently. Friday night starters in the SEC are all elite and will be epic battles. Having depth on the backend of the weekend helps when your Friday guy comes up short in a pitching duel. Not having to have Johnny Wholestaff as your Sunday guy can be comforting, I think we have that depth.

"Highway to Hoover" is really the name of something concerning baseball? That tournament once meant something years ago but now it's meaningless unless you suck and need to win a game or two to increase your stock. I'd rather go "one and done" or "2 &Q", whatever the format is now and go back home and let everybody rest and heal up rather than have to play a bunch of games in a weekend till 2:00 on the morning wasting arms and risking injuries

I mean yeah this would be awesome but that's asking a lot. Most teams don't have a full 3-man rotation. That's a straight up luxury.

Closest I ever remember us having that is 2016 but even then it was the end of the year before Houston came on strong. We still lacked that depth to get us over the hump.

UCLA had a good 3-man deal in 2013.

Agreed, I’d love to see that but doesn’t everybody? Isn’t that one of the dream scenarios. I don’t think we are going to have a ‘true’ ace. I believe our strength will be various arms. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t know if one of those guys makes the Stratton, Hudson, Bednar jump this year. It really is a lot to ask for.

If our offense delivers as we think it will, our rotation doesn’t have to be the best in the country for us to be a contender. Just need to be generally solid and situationally clutch.

That said, we’ve got a ton of pitching talent on our team, too. A lot of it is just freshmen and sophomores that haven’t proven a ton yet, with a few older guys sprinkled in.

When Ginn was healthy in 2019 we had a really good 3 man rotation with Small-Ginn-Plumlee.

2024 would have been a completely different year if Dohm had stayed healthy.
We had this rotation to begin the season:
Friday - Nate Dohm
Saturday - Khal Stephen
Sunday - Jurrangelo Cijntje

Khal & Loo ended up having great seasons that year and Sunday was a bullpen piecemeal. If Dohm had stayed healthy, then the 3 starters were all legit and the bullpen would have been deeper because you wouldn't have to same arms to survive Sundays. As it was, we ended up blowing a lot of late leads due to the thin bullpen

Our issues in 2024 were more on offense, that team had zero depth at the plate. Bottom half of the order was below average too, and you had Jordan and Hines both prone to major cold streaks.

Will never forget us playing at Ole Miss fairly late in the season and our starting DH for one of the games was a guy who was hitting .000 on the season. That’s how thin we were.
