College eligibility will soon guarantee employment until the player files for Social Security.
I don't blame the players , it's the system the NCAA has allowed to happened is the culprit,

Crazy that’s it’s been spread over 8 years, but it’s really just his 5th year which isn’t all that uncommon. Hoping he stays healthy and improves his draft stock, Miami has reloaded on defense

He likely heard that his injury history means he will be drafted late or not at all, in which case another guaranteed year of NIL makes better sense than a small NFL rookie deal.

I suppose if he was choosing to play his 8th year at RU I wouldn't be so critical...
When he was out for the season in 2024, recuperating at Rutgers, did he feel no loyalty to RU ?

The man had multiple injuries, 2 acl tears on the same knee. I don't know how that would translate to the Nfl draft. He might as well get paid to play football as long as he can. And I think this is the last bunch of guys with COVID eligibility as well. Lol just enjoy the games and don't think about the storyline and drama. Football is football

I'm not as upset as a lot of you are. Toure red-shirted his freshman year; had his second year exempted because of Covid; and has had two medical waivers for serious knee injuries. Why shouldn't he be able to play, assuming he is a legitimate graduate student?
er

Fair point, especially if he's pursuing a degree or certificate

until eligibility rules are changed to prevent eligibility issues like this from happening, Mo would be foolish not to take advantage of it .
It might be pay to play and making the most out of it.
Could be furthering his education to start out in the business world a step ahead of the game.
Maybe to prove his knees are sound so an NFL team would take a flyer on him in the draft.
Or just aim to be a player NFL team would offer a FA contract after the draft after making it though 2026 without
any injury problems and looked good .
Whatever the reason, no reason not to take advantage of 8th year eligibility

It seems to me the key question is whether eligibility rules should be changed to prevent what he is doing -- and I don't see any reason to stop someone like him so long as he's legitimately in a graduate program.

Not sure about him being drafted. He'll like 25 or 26 when he finally runs out of eligibility. Not sure too many teams are going to take a chance on a rookie that old

Not sure how I'm feeling about this. But loved him when he played for RU

Ben Mauk is only 41. He only played in 3 of 6 seasons.

In 2003, Mauk redshirted his first season at Wake Forest.
In 2004, Mauk played in ten games and started three at Wake Forest. (1)
In 2005, he played in ten games and started seven at Wake Forest; (2)
In 2006, Mauk sustained an injury to his right (throwing) arm in the first game, ending his season.
In 2007, Mauk played for Cincinnati under Brian Kelly, and the Bearcats finished with a 10–3 record (3)
In 2008, Mauk tried to gain one more year of eligibility for the season, and he was denied by the NCAA.

Until you have some sort of CBA, some rules and regulations will be under threat of lawsuit.

Eventually, I think it will happen but who knows when. IMO government intervention is unlikely so it’ll have to be a CBA.

I also do not blame Mo and hope he is using this time to also further his education. As for his loyalty to RU that someone mentioned while recovering from his injury- bot MO and RU both did their fair parts. Mo got injured playing for RU and RU took care of the injury. Equals out- as for making the transfer- At that point, Mo was already here for 4 years, I think...SO, he did that part, and obviously, Miami made him a great offer. And it worked out great for him and Miami. Now- if granted the 8th year, I am sure he is now getting at least 7 figures. And if he is still taking education serious- that is a home run for the kid. Being a little older going to the NFL isn't all that big of a deal if he has proven his knee healthy. Even if late rounds- he continues with a 7 figure salary for as long as he can and then move on to his next stage of life with a great education.

Eligibility rules need to be fixed, along with NIL and Transfer portal. But, until they are- kids would be fools not to take advantage.

It seems that blue blood programs get these elderly players for many more years from the NCAA.
Didn't Rutgers have a transfer player that was stuck in the NCAA file recently?

It's an interesting decision. I dont think an extra year helps from draft perspective, so he must believe another year of NIL offsets potential impact to his NFL earnings. With his injury history I dont know if I agree.

‘Legitimate’ is questionable for him and for everyone in the sport. Many of our athletes are hardly students either. C’mon now. Being enrolled is a different thing than going to real classes and taking real tests. The slippery slope started in 1869 and 150+ years later you can’t even see the mountain anymore.

Enough with this horse$t. They should simplify it by having a hard age cutoff of 24. You can play as much as you want until 24, can't play at 24 years and a day or older.

I don't think the rules will ever be applied the same for Rutgers as for Alabama.

That is the best way >taking classes just like the undergraduate players have to do and the same academic standards must be there .
If online courses are academically acceptable to maintain eligibility, I won't cry about it.

Rutgers should bring in Ben , never have enough experienced QB competing for the starters position and having a player older then the refs might just have the refs feel they must protect their elders and make roughing the QB calls they wouldn't make for the ( what might be considered) normal age college QBs

During the pandemic, online courses became academically acceptable for *everybody.* That hasn't changed. So there's no reason not to let athletes do them.

All the angry old men can shut up now. As Tom Petty sang: "You don't know what it's like to be me."

End of thread right here:

How many degrees does this professional “student” athlete have by now? masters? If you’re going spend that much time in college, I hope he’s made the best of it. Chances of making it to the big show are low.
