From what I’ve read, they have the financing to complete phase 1 of the project, which includes a turf practice field. That is supposed to happen this year. The football stadium would then be built around the turf field in phase 2, contingent on securing the financing.

It's about time JCA has been able to have an on campus stadium. Good for them.

Pretty cool news. Interested to see how long before the actual stadium is built.

Wasn't there some artwork on how it would all look? I feel like I've seen it, and that it was some pretty badass looking stuff.

Very exciting for the Hilltoppers.

Yes but for some reason now I cannot find it. Sometimes these renderings are not what the final product actually is, not saying that is the case but just saying.

All.... A pet peeve of mine is adequate seating for away fans. I would imagine with a stadium that will seat 5500 the picture rendering that shows little seating for visitors will not end up that way. Ratsy

All.... When SHG built their stadium suggestions were taken from the alumini. One that came up by many of the Cyclone faithful was adequate seating on both sides. The stadium seats 4600 with 2200 on the visitor side. Berm seating as well on the grass adjacent to the stands on both sides of the field and beyond the end zone. The kids really like hanging out with each other in this area. The cost was more doing all of that but Cyclone folk like to accommodate when possible and felt that was important. The project of course was self funded..... Ratsy

Love how they maximized every inch and every yard of that facility really impressive for a pretty much land locked area

I've had to suffer through sitting on Br. Rices stacked picnic tables visitor stands for years so I get it. (Feeto is retired someone had to take a shot at Rices stands, so that was for you Feeto, wherever you are).

But that being said, in all honesty, with game streams being so popular, visitors attendance at games is pretty dismal. Yes there is exceptions depending on the team, conference and rivalries but I think a Visitor stands that seat 500 with standing room options is more then enough for most games. Maybe even 400. I wouldn't invest money in building much bigger the visitors just aren't coming as much now outside of families, girlfriends, small student section and die hards.

Agreed. It is just not worth the investment for the one big game with overflow visitor fans that may happen once every five years. Totally different world we are living in now compared to a decade or two ago. Sad really to see how small attendance has gotten.

I would imagine the JCA field will seat 4500ish on the home side and 1000ish on the other side. That seems like a reasonable breakdown.

When is the estimated timeline to have the stadium completed. From the sound of it that is phase two and the funding is not secured?

I assume if they break ground on phase 1 on March 1, the hope is to get the turf field done by the start of this fall sports season so football practices and soccer games/lower level FB games can take place on it starting in August. Maybe mid-fall at the latest.

I would think phase 2 likely wouldn't begin until at least the following year. That means I see 2026 and likely 2027 as years where there is no stadium yet and they just practice and play soccer games and lower level games at the new field. Fall 2028 seems likely to be the first year to see a game at the stadium.

If I remember right, MC did something similar. I remember a game where they had the turf field but not the stadium yet (perhaps against Hales Franciscan?) where they played at their home field with no permanent bleachers available.

Perhaps if they have some type of temporary bleachers for soccer or frosh football out, they can fence off a portion of the field and host a varsity game or two against an opponent that would yield a small crowd in 2027, but I see no reason to do that. I would imagine 2028 would be likely as the earliest we see a stadium as long as the funding happens.

Correct. I'm not sure what year MC got the field turf installed on their varsity practice field but I think 2015 was the first Varsity home game played on campus. It was usually against a team that wasn't going to bring in a lot of fans....so Hales....Leo....De La Salle one year for sure....I remember Fenwick in 2018....MC brought in temporary stands on one side that held about 500.

When someone told me the costs of MC playing at Gately each year it was ridiculous. The City pays for CPS teams to play there but MC had to flip the bill on the rental fee....plus 2 bus rentals....they got a small % of the gate and I was told none of the concessions. Depending on how far they went in the playoffs it was tens of thousands of dollars...I don't know what JCs agreement is with Memorial but I hope it's better then what MC had with Gately.

JCA pays a flat fee per game. They don't rent any busses and I believe they get the entire gate. I feel like the concessions has changed year to year. The Hilltoppers have played at Memorial Stadium for 75 years and I have really enjoyed the set up as a player, parent and fan. However, I think it is time for an on-campus stadium.

As a fan, I always hated it. So far away from the field and the stands always half empty because they are so large.

⬆️ Main reason why I love Mt Carmels set up so much - such an intimate setting being so close to the action.

All the blue (bleachers and track) is an odd choice for a community field that clashes for JCA and St Francis.

That’s one of the things I like about JCA’s proposed new stadium. In the renderings I’ve seen, there is no track around the field, so the fans should be close to the action.

I think the vast seating and areas around the field for standing room viewing were previously features that have only become bugs in the last 10-15 years, so the time is right to make the switch now for sure. For decades until the mid 2000s, a lighly attended game would have 3-4k in attendance and 1-2 games a year would be capable of having over 10,000. The size of the stadium was needed for that and it made for a great environment for games against MC, Morris, Providence, Marian, the Brook, NN, etc.

Now we are in an age where a lightly attended game may have a few thousand if lucky and even the biggest playoff games may be only in the 7k range, that size and scope of the stadium which was previously needed and made for a great environment now detracts from the environment for 90 percent of games because of how cavernous the stadium is.

In the last 15 years, I can only think of the following games that were packed on both sides.....2012 Montini semi and the 2023 PC semi and even those "full" games were still south of 8000 in attendance.

The 2024 Morris semi and pretty much any regular season Providence game seemed to be "half" full at maybe 5k or a shade over that.

So in 15 years, I can think of 2 "packed" environments and even they were probably in the 7500 range, not 10-12k.

From 1980-2007ish, that number of games over 7500 in attendance would be at least 2 per year and often more than that. Memorial was great and served its purpose. Just like MC discovered with Gately, the era is different now and accommodating crowds of 12,000 is likely a thing of the past. So the time is right.

Are they responsible for getting there on there own from the school on game days and do they access to the Locker rooms there to get ready? MC had to get ready at MC, bus to Gately, bus back to MC after. It was always just part of the MC culture so they didn't know how great it was to play on campus. Let less of a pain on the a**.

Yes, players are responsible for getting there on their own. They have full access to the locker rooms before and after the games. I feel like it has more of a home field feel than Gately did for Carmel. Unlike Gately, which has many schools using it, Memorial Stadium is really just JCA and St Francis. For many years, including when I was there, JC was the only team that used the stadium as a home field. We practiced at the stadium and used the locker rooms throughout the year.

Interesting. When did CPS deny them use of the locker rooms? I remember the JC teams getting to utilize the Gately locker rooms in the 90s and early 00s in games against MC and Leo.

Sounds like Gately must have gotten increasingly less accommodating as the years went on, which makes sense why they wanted their own field a little before JC started considering it. I agree with USD that Memorial is still a true home field advantage. It feels welcoming and comfortable and right to be there and the park district is a good partner. But with high school sports getting a fraction of the attendance of decades past, it is simply an "environment" and financial decision. Better environment in a fuller stadium and it will be huge to have better practice facilities for football and soccer and maybe eventually lacrosse.

Very true. In listening to Ryan Quigley at the council meeting, they also plan to allow youth football organizations to use the facility, which should help with recruiting.

They were allowed to use the locker rooms, if you want to call them that, at Gately but they weren't very accommodating for a large size team. They were more like waiting rooms 😂

I think the field will actually be the same distance away from the bleachers as memorial stadium. The designs show quite a bit of distance because of the walkway and soccer lines.

Wonder why they need soccer lines when they are also building a new soccer field.

Hope the distance to field is closer than what the drawings below are showing.
