The Brands can contribute to wrestling in ways beyond coaching. There's TV and there's lobbying internationally for wrestling. There is also the likely opportunity to give speaking engagements. I would love to see the Brands speaking more freely about what matters to them than the present dynamics of Iowa press conferences.

Does Gable want to coach again? He's at the matches anyway...

He wouldn't be effective in todays game. He could likely stir up a recruiting class though off name alone. Would you hand Belichick an NFL head coaching job again or has that passed? It took awhile but we realized might have been more about Tom Brady. I think we need to accept Brands had two perfect storms- The double recruiting class which he inherited quite a bit by Z and the Iowa brand name- and the Spencer/ YG storm help by Strittmater which rebuilt the program for a short period. But take away those 2 storms and what you see is the reality. A lot of underacheiving.

To piggyback on the Iowa fans wanting it to be the perfect choice like Taylor in order to come to grips with where Brands is at..I say look no further than Vrabel in New England. He couldn't do anything with the Titans but now he is a great head coach in the right environment.

The Iowa brand makes Brands more than he makes the program. I would stop underestimating what a great coach who is at a lesser program could do if he was given a top job.

Do you really think Brands could go to Illinois or say Oklahoma and he would consistently beat Iowa and whomever replaces him at the helm?

Good idea I think this will give us a more accurate representation.

I voted no in this poll. Though I am acutely aware that changes need to happen, and I become less and less convinced year after year, that the Brands bros are capable of making those changes.

The problem is who the hell do you replace them with. Nolf, Dake, Pat pop, Burroughs, Schwab (in that order imo) all have warts to some degree. Whether it’s lack of experience, not a big enough name, or to similar to our current head coaches.

If this change does indeed happen I hope like hell Beth conducts a hell of comprehensive search and interviews the hell out of potential candidates. Because as much as we think things are trending down now, it can get worse.

Just my .02 cents.

This topic has received a ton of commentary this week from the podcast bros. One thing many of them keep saying was, “what did Iowa fans expect to happen last weekend?”

This implies it’s an overreaction or we are unrealistic with what we want. It ignores the fact that we lost to ISU for the first time in years, and squeaked by a terrible Wisconsin the week before winning 6 matches to 4 and 2 of the wins were razor thin.

It also ignores the lack of offense, lack of fight, and lack of conditioning that we have seen this year. The product has been pretty rough except for what I would consider 3 bright spots. One of which is gone now because Tom booted him off the team because of a dispute about the degree in which he was injured.

All of this to say it’s an accumulation and not just a snap reaction to a bad loss to the best team in the country. For that reason, I regretfully vote yes.

Great example WRT Vrabel in TN vice NE. These Titans fans are going crazy now that they've suffered back to back to back 3-14 seasons.

Sometimes it needs to get worse to get better. I love TnT but I love Hawks wrestling more. We've looked flat for a few years now...change is needed.

I'm with you on this. I am really hoping Mo gets reinstated and wrestles in March. Without him, that costs Iowa 12-16 points that they don't have to lose. I feel like they would have to wrestle out of their minds to get 2nd or 3rd and could fall to 5th or 6th very easily with a few slip ups with no Mo. Iowa could be 1 injury (God forbid) away from things getting really ugly the rest of this season

I can't seem to stay off the fence here. Find myself liking posts from both sides. For now, my answer depends:
1) If we get on fire, finish second, and truly see some sign TnT are adapting, I can live with letting their contracts play out, even with current assistants. Seems an unlikely scenario, but will wait and see.
2) If we finish 3rd/4th and with little sense of new excitement in the air, we only keep Brands if Tom makes changes to assistants AND they are some of the more exciting names out there AND he gives them freedom to make changes to training/etc. One of them takes the program over 3 years later, Tom can go out on good terms - great Hawk, want his end to be good. If 3rd/4th and unwilling to make changes, time to start anew.
3) We finish 5th or lower, I say time to move on regardless; the time is coming sooner than later anyway, though I hope this is not how it ends. And if so, I will have to just hope we can indeed draw some exciting coaching talent, as things CAN get worse and even stay worse.

I reserve the right to change my opinion 3 more times today.

Yes, the numbers don't lie. PSU natty points are exponentially growing in number in comparison to ours. Their last total was so much more than ours that the difference alone was more than some of our 1st place totals in the past. If you only do what you've already done you're only going to have what you already got. Something has to give.

But the grievous thing to me is not just the behind-the-times techniques, but the lack of aggression and inferior endurance. How on God's earth can we be behind with the gas tank? Let alone when it's not because we're attacking like crazy.

I think my heart really started to sink a few years ago when I saw a Brands somehow not wrestle like a Brands. Terry's son, albeit placing one year, was not wrestling at all with his father's aggression. It was coached. If PSU has taught un anything, aggression cannot be sacrificed on the altar of whatever technique is being used.

Quick scroll through the no votes shows a lot of PSU names if that tells ya anything.
I resemble that remark.

I will say that this should be the last year that the staff remains “as-is.” Terry should lead HWC. Love Dennis, but he just isn’t a program leader as a personality. All of our top recruits with world ambition seem drawn to Terry, so let that connection remain. As much as I appreciate what Morningstar and Bobby have brought to our program, it just isn’t doing the job right now. Bring in new guys, former Hawks or not. I’d throw the checkbook at Metcalf, Nolf or Kem, and Mocco. The product has become stagnant, and it unfortunately resembles the style of some of our corner men.

Without significant staffing changes AND complete departure of Terry, this should be it. Tom and Terry are identical mindsets and I think reinforce each other's worst traits. Same with all the assistants that they coached. No meaningful change happens until the hands on staffing is changed and the head assistant coach can be trusted to push back or lead different stylistic directions. For God sake we need someone that knows what back points and pins are.
