Iowa ranked No. 17 in final AP Poll

I like where we’re at, but still behind Vandy is a head scratcher. Only thing I can think of is that voters didn’t like our loss to a bad Iowa State team. I mean, barely losing to the eventual national champion, a CFP semifinalist, and USC on the road should be enough to be placed ahead of a team we beat soundly in a bowl game. 🤷‍♂️

You could make an argument, but one close head to head result doesn't alter the influence of an entire season. The losses to IND and OR didn’t hurt at all, but add in the losses to ISU and USC and you have a 9-4 team vs Vandys 10-3. Iowa still ranked above USC even after losing to them. Other than Vandy, Iowa didn’t beat any top 25 teams to bolster the resume. If they'd finished 10-3 by beating any of those 4 it's likely they'd be ranked above them if not in the top 10.

There's that old transitive theory again,

Should ISU have been ranked ahead of Iowa in 2002, just because ISU won the head to head?

It happens.

That said, solid season. A hair away from a great one, if only Iowa could have won a couple of those close ones.
Don't be stupid.

Iowa and Vandy had very similar resumes this season. Massey composite and nearly every SOS/SOR ranking has them within a few spots of each other. Humans doing final rankings should default to the head-to-head winner being ranked higher.

The problem is that people who do these rankings don't dissect the entire thing out like people do when evaluating their own team, so it's no surprise that the SEC team with the Heisman finalist somehow ended up a bit higher.

What ranked teams did Vandy beat?

So there is no argument to be made, Iowa should have finished above Vandy...unless you believe the SEC bias is justified?
No. I'm just saying that one game doesn't change a season. If Iowa doesn't end up with 4 losses they're likely a top 10 team. Don't lose to a crappy ISU team and they're likely a top 10 team. How many 9-4 teams are ranked above Iowa in the final poll?

Vandy beat no one. They were overrated just like their paper tiger conference. if Lester doesn’t get cute with that pick on the four yard line, we probably blow them out. We dominated the LOS and led from start to finish, a thorough azz whipping.
It was a 7 point victory. Not an azz whipping.

Was it not Phil Parker's defense that collapsed down the stretch against USC, Oregon, and IU?

Since we're blaming the guys in the headsets and not the guys who only need to make a tackle or hit a screen pass anybody who can post on this board can hit 10 out of 10 times...
If only KF could have done surgery on Gronks shoulder himself and personally done his physical therapy

I'm not discussing whether Iowa would've been T10, my gripe is not being ranked ahead of Vandy ...which we should be.

I was speaking to your reply below on "making an argument" as it related to that specific scenario, not the T10 thing...

It was a physical beat down, where Iowa led start to finish and wouldnt have been close if Lester just runs it in from the four yard line. the LOS was dominated by Iowa.
All anybody looks at is the final score, and besides, Vandy had more total yards and more first downs. Take off your black and gold glasses for just a moment and you'll see that it ended up being a close competitive game. Nobody in their right mind calls it an azz whipping.

Rewatch the game, Vandy could never really challenge or get back in the game, some garbage points late, that’s it. Iowa was dominant.

The AP poll is a joke and should be scrapped. A full 50% of the teams in their preseason poll didn't even end up in the final poll. Iowa never made a single appearance in the AP poll until this final one. Had we been properly ranked throughout the season, given our body of work and the teams we played, we'd have finished a lot higher than 17th. Is there anyone with a functioning brain that thinks we would lose to Alabama this year? But because they started the year so high, they could lose to a putrid FSU team and still finish in the Top 10. Blow it up.

Stupid question time for me! Is there a final Coach's poll and a final BSC ranking?
Of course there's a final Coach's poll.

And no, the CFP Committee (BSC/BCS LOL) does not meet again to make final rankings. Their job was only to put together the CFP field.

oh what could have been...

damnit Kirk
Oh what could have been is the mantra all the time with Kirk Ball, 2021 -2023 could have been way better with a passing game, that was very poor on Kirk and Brian's part to not see what they had in Charley Jones, to let the OLine be below average, and to not have the receivers and a QB that could be even 10-15% better. If Petras just improves over his pretty good 2020 season and if we have receivers who could consistently catch the ball we win a few more games more than the huge bunch of wins we had and we would have won many games in a much easier fashion

I don't have to. It was a 7 point game in the 3rd and 4th quarter. If that's not "in the game" I don't know what is, but whatever. Numbers are obviously irrelevant in this discussion.

lol, we all watched the game, rewrite your own history if it makes you feel better. O line blew Vandy off the ball and D sacked the midget four times in the first half. garbage points late but never really a threat to win the game.
