Jan’s use of Deal is a concern

Seems strange to me. And I think it will hurt recruiting, at least in getting the best of the best. There’s one thing to be patient and earning your time. Then there’s whatever Jan is doing with Deal.

No reason she shouldn’t be starting or getting 25 mins a game. Iowa just does not have enough firepower or dynamic playmaking on the perimeter and wing. And she has all of it.

Deal got an extended run in the first half when she was productive and playing well.

She got a shot in the third quarter and apparently developed temporary color blindness because she threw 3-4 passes that had no shot of getting through.

She'll learn, and Jan will keep giving her minutes.

Agree. Just makes no sense. Went from a 2 point game to an 11 pt game w when she was on the floor. Shes already the best interior passer from the perimeter given her skill and size.

Play your best players.

Deal has found her shooting stroke which is fantastic for this team

But had 3 awful turnovers in 15 minutes. One was a pass into triple coverage.

She about net natural with points she gave up.

Addie is progressing well, What would really b beneficial is if Taylor McCabe could find her shot, She had numerous wide open looks and shot 3-11.

Thinking big picture. If Iowa is going to make any noise in the postseason, Deal has to be a primary contributor and go to player. Longer she 0pkYa behind the Taylors then it will become harder.

Yeah. McCabe is really struggling with her shot right now. I hope she can either get in a groove or curtail the number of shots that she's taking. She's shooting 25% over the last 7 games on high volume (13/51).

Played well in the first half, struggled in the second. Jan knows what she's doing. We beat a team with one loss, give it a rest.

I don't know what you've seen that makes you believe she's the best perimeter passer on the team. She might be as she continues to develop her game but she's not right now.

And to your point about her being the only player that gets punished that's not true. Stremlow had two really bad turnovers in the second half as well. Jan brought Chit Chat back in and Taylor sat the rest of the game.

A majority of coaches are going to sit a Freshman if they are turning the ball over. It's not just a Jan thing.

Go to player, c'mon man. She might be option 4 or 5. Hannah, Ava, Chit Chat the maybe she is fourth option on offense.

That was a set play that they have run several times, The play is set up for Taylor to come off the screen and take the shot.

Addie is just now having breakthrough performances. She will continue to play more as the season progresses, particularly if McCabe continues to struggle shooting. She’s on the Heiden trajectory, but a little earlier than Ava. Deal will have a great second half of the BIG season. Next year she steps into a starting role. Jan has handled her just fine.

Jan wants to break her of becoming as turnover happy as Caitlin was being loose with the basketball because she could get away with it.

Deal is not that player and there's no trade-off (right now) with her scoring/passing leading to scores if she's gonna commit multiple turnovers..

CC could have 5-7 turnovers a game, but also 25 pts and 8 assists, which would amount to 16 pts at worst, for a total of 41 pts she was responsible or partially responsible for.

Deal is not even close to that kind of consistent production yet, so Jan doesn't want her to be just as loose with the ball (...........right now).

Deal had 3 TOs in 6 mins in the 2H.

No way she deserved more time.

Getting more minutes than Stremlow the last 2 games.. got the last 5 minutes of the 3rd and had multiple turnovers and easily could’ve had more.. got put back in late in the 4th and picked up another quick turnover.

Putting her back in late in game the 4th showed the trust.. but rolled with the starters the last 3:30.

Right now McCabe offers more ball security and a bit more activity on the boards. Plus better defense.

Deal definitely shooting better the last few games.. and can make some tougher assists(if that makes sense.. but sometimes at a cost)

Expect the senior to get the trust late.. but the last 2 Jan has rewarded Deal more minutes than Stremlow, who hasn’t performed how she wants to the last couple games.

I think Addie needs to be more selfish with the ball in her hands. She can shoot and she can drive and score, but too often she defers to trying to feed the post, and has either a great feed, or a head scratcher. If we are patient as fans, we are going to have a heck of a player to watch

Actually none of our players are great at feeding the post. She’s not the only one. It’s insane how many of our turnovers come from just passing into the post.

There are great passes into the post.. the issue is when they force it when it’s not there.

I judge that as 2 different concepts.

There was a play where Heiden had an edge for an easy bucket. Kylie knew she didn’t have the right angle and fed Chat in the corner who immediately got it to Heiden for the easy bucket. Great play by both and smart play to get it to somebody who had a better angle.

This is exactly why she got pulled at that point. Several very poor decisions passing the ball in critical moments late in the game. She played great on offense! Just some decision making issues that were happening so consistently during that stretch that Jan needed to get someone else in.

Deal needs to work on her passing to the post. -- She threw the call away at least 3 to 4 times in crucial times in the game. If she gets that down and works on her dribbling- She should be starting -

Jan is not just handling this fine, she is handling it very well. Letting a freshman sharpshooter gain confidence without forcing her to fight fatigue. Jan is also doing a great job working in the other 2 freshmen. Things look good for this season so far, and the future is bright.

I think she needs to string a few more games together before making these claims. I do think she needs more minutes and has a little shorter leash which is common as a freshman. Higher ceiling and the team is winning so no major changes need to be made.

Man she had a couple great chances to seal the game. Thankfully MSU coaches didn't play hacka Hannah down the stretch. Huge fail on their part.

Or shoot the ball. ChitChat was 4-6, 2-4 from 3 and 1-1 FTs. I would like to see her shoot 15 or 20 per game.

Still a long way to go in the season and her minutes are up the last couple games.

I like her coming off the bench at this point in her career. I think she got 15 minutes yesterday. Maybe she should have go a little bit more but lets see how things shake out moving forward.

If she stays in the 15-20 minute range I think that's a step in the right direction for her. She doesn't need to start for that.

She struggled a lot earlier in the season and Jan has kept her in the mix and brought her along slowly...which is what I think you do with a freshman. (especially one that struggled early but has potential)

In short...she got 20 minutes last game and 15 in this one. Not sure what you want.

She's headed in the right direction.
