Have you seen the recent guys OSU is bringing in? Looks like they are targeting veteran back ups. Many if one year if eligibility. It looks like a thought out strategy of having “ready to play” talent if the need arises.
Starting caliber Big Ten players: what OSU views as complimentary/depth/rotational pieces.

Obviously I'm including the superback era as tight ends and we had plenty of guys in the superback era who were as good or better than Welcing... but that was quite a time ago. Cam Green graduated in 2018. To be clear, I am not saying Welcing is better than everybody from the Green/Dickerson/Dunsmore/Vitale era guys. I AM saying he's the best since then, and VERY clearly a LOT better than everybody since then other than John Raine.
And Thomas Gordon, currently on the Bears practice squad

Marshall Lang was also on the Seahawks at one point.

We’ve had decent, talented TEs thanks to recruiting so many.

Getting them regularly involved in the offense has been the issue.

Olsen is the second most accurate NU kicker since 2000, behind only Budzien, so I generally agree with you more than GCG that this is a palpable loss... but looking at the actual stats, Olsen was a fantastic 78.4% for his career (and an amazing 90% this year), but 7 other guys who kicked at least a year were above 70%, so it's actually not that unprecedented that we have a pretty reliable kicker, and the new guy Kleather was 19/22 last year with multiple makes over 50 yards, so it's proving not that difficult to bring in a reliable guy annually in the portal era. Kleather is just as good or better than Olsen, tbh.
Olsen is taking his talents to South Beach and will be kicking at The U next year. Ain’t no way he ain’t getting a chunk of cash with that with that they do with cash.

The U will have to pay a lot for player retention besides what they pay for portal players. But I for one hope Olsen gets as much as possible. He played well for us and I don’t wish him any ill will. We got a good replacement with a strong leg. So it’s a win-win.

The U is likely swimming in NIL money with their national championship run. They have tons of wealthy alumni and supporters.

@CoralSpringsCat can probably give us a better idea of the difference in the two programs’ financial situations better than most. I’m sure they threw Olsen a bit of cash on top of his scholarship.

You don’t know that. He left NU for exclusively degree reasons, not looking for a bag.
JFC. You’re just making a straw man argument. I am not suggesting he left NU for any other reason than to pursue a new degree.

I just pointed out that you said he wasn’t going to get paid anywhere, which was wrong. It’s not the reason he left, but he was a good enough kicker to have a market. He wasn’t going to go anywhere for free. And he landed at The U.

The ACC changed their rules at Clemson’s insistence that teams making playoff runs don’t have to share with the conference, so in addition to Miami’s already large pile of Ruiz and donor cash, they are indeed getting $20 M straight from the CFP. They’re rich as hell.

What a weak excuse for a conference. Can’t wait for their TV rights to be up for renewal so the B1G and SEC can take the best remaining teams and finalize the “Two SuperConference” model.

The SEC can have Miami. I’m not interested in playing conference games in Florida. I realize the West Coast is farther but it feels like the former PAC 12 is more akin to the Big Ten perhaps because of the Rose Bowl affiliation. Anyhoo, if the ACC gets sliced up, It will be interesting to see who the B1G wants to take. The typical academic profiles they historically emphasized like AAU may not apply. I would think UVA certainly from academics standpoint and maybe UNC/Duke depending on if they’d rather be in SEC. Pitt is strong in research. Syracuse used to be AAU and is committed to sports if not recently successful. I don’t know about BC, they don’t really fit the profile of either super conference

And I’m saying I would be shocked if he really got paid by Miami.

Syracuse ain’t getting in ****. UVA has to make sure it’s really good and competitive for awhile to jar a chance at being a Big Ten TV draw. I don’t know if it can. UNC absolutely. Miami will be SEC. FSU has also always felt SEC to me but there were rumors of Big Ten opportunity so who knows.

Best part is national title game participants get a $3M stipend for travel expenses. But since it’s a home game for Miami they get to pocket that, too.

Also, @lou v reported on Twitter an hour ago that he spoke with Olson and he's transferring 100% because he already has a master's degree from Kellogg and there isn't a program at NU that benefits his future career path, so he's looking to go somewhere that has whatever program he's looking for. So win one for the people who still point to the impact of academics.
Sounds like a kid with a plan and a good head on his shoulders! All you can do is wish him well!

Why did B1G take Rutgers and Maryland. TV markets. I’d think that Cuse and UVA would increase draw of the NY and DMV media markets. I’m sure Duke and UNC may prefer to go SEC.

Pitt, Syracuse, UNC, and Duke wouldn't add that much to the B1G. They are just a bunch of what I used to call as a kid, "beat ons".
