Koch and Folgueiras are going to have to score. Cooper missed several wide open threes. Folgy had open shots and didn't shoot.
Neither of these situations are isolated. It's how they've been trending. IMO, Ben has other more effective options to go with and he did replace Koch with Tate for half the game. Tate needs more of those minutes. Folgueiras has really struggled in Big10 play. Manyawu and Howard are only averaging 19 mins per game and Banks only 20, so minutes are available to players who are more effective today.

It’s pretty simple, isn’t it? If Koch isn’t playing great then play Sage and Banks more. All good. We might get a few games still from Folgueras but the physicality of this league seems a little much for him. He’s got some skill but he’s still thin and pretty finesse. Koch maybe has hit a wall but hopefully can play through it. But again,, we won by 17!

It's nice to have options for sure and that defensive effort requires a blow now and then.

Cooper hasn’t been great all year. I think his style plays better under Fran’s system than Ben’s.
Oh cmon. He’s a pretty physical kid with a nice shot. Hes going to fit in perfectly. It’s his 1st year of playing for goodness sakes. You are the most negative poster I’ve ever seen my man. Hey, we won by 17 on the road at IU today and actually bullied and embarrassed them. Go have a drink!

Koch plays well on the defensive end IMO. Ben sounds like he really likes him. If you listen to Ben speak he looks at things totally differently than we do as he should.

Alvaro plays soft. I think Ben keeps sending him out and giving him a chance to step up, although he does work hard on defense, which is no small contribution, of course.

Sage has been terrific. He's definitely earned more minutes. Koch may be in a midseason shooting slump, so I wouldn't give up on him. Banks is the MVP, along with Stirtz, who played his best game yesterday. Maybe Bennett is healthy and is acclimated to the Big Ten now. That would bode well for the rest of the season. Manyawu and Howard are somewhat inconsistent, but man, at times they are fabulous. I'm on board with both those guys. Combs just seems to quietly go about his business, doings what needs to be done--scoring, playing great D, passing. He's right there with Banks and Stirtz as one of the keys to this team's success. Love his game.

If the Hawkeyes can stay healthy, I think we're in for a lot of fun the rest of the way. Ben has the guys ready to roll.

If we're going to go on a run we have to rebound better and not turn the ball over. Defense is unreal and Stirtz is something else.

Alvaro plays soft. I'm a little surprised he's getting as many minutes as he is. I think Ben keeps sending him out and giving him a chance to step up. So far, Alvaro is wasting those opportunities, which I imagine will continue to dwindle.

I don't know that AF plays soft, and I'm not giving up on him or Koch. I just think some of those minutes are better allocated to other players who are operating at a higher level today. Manyawu has his 2 highest minute totals the last 2 games because IMO he's earned it all year. With BM being such a defensive minded guy, Manyawu has been a terrific defender inside for a team that's lacking in size down low and has the highest PER on the team so far this year and also leads the team in conference field goal percentage and rebound rate. He and Banks are really needed down low. For a 6'8" guy, Koch is rebounding at a very meager rate in comparison to the other forwards and Tate who's listed as a guard also rebounds at a much higher rate.

I think against Indiana, that Koch didn't get many shots when in the corner and with his feet set. He kind of had to catch and shoot before setting up. Probably because defenders now know this and make him move.

Agree 100% on this. He did the exact same thing last year almost every game, played Cam about the first 4 minutes and then he would bring in Banks to replace him. Banks could get away with playing some Center in the Valley but Folgueras replacing Cam doesn’t seem to be working so well. Banks stayed out of foul trouble today and as you said Cam is basically our only true inside defender, and even he is undersized. Glad to see them both get more minutes today. We’re a much more physical team with the both of them getting the majority of minutes.

Huh. I wasn't aware of this strategy being a carry over as I never followed Drake. Interesting.

Koch is almost as bad as Pryce Sandfort.

Maximum sarcasm alert for @fivecardstud14 .
Still waiting for you to find the quote where I said Pryce Sandfort sucks. You won't find it because I never said that, but you keep spouting away. Just like you spout that a Harding/Sandfort backcourt would be the best in college hoops. You really know ball!

I agree Al and Coop played good defense yesterday but when two of your five starters score zero points, you put a lot more pressure on Bennett. Fortunately Banks had a great game.

I wish we could combine Cam and Folgueiras into 1 player. We need each though this year. Cam is tough, and relentless albeit limited in his skillset. Folgueiras isn't as physically capable or maybe willing to do some of the dirty work but he's a great pick and pop big that also is a great passer when he's not trying to do too much. Seems like in Bens eyes a good Folgueiras would be the primary 5 but his level varies so much from game to game that it's nice to have Cam.

Like to see Ben get a 7 footer and keep Folgueiras at the 4. He's so on and off, you don't know what you get til he steps on the floor. Jess talked about him needing to be more aggressive going to the basket, and he did for awhile, but now not so much. He bobbled an easy pass last game, so I wonder if he's overthinking a bit.

He's in a 4 body with the skillset of a 4.
Thank you, an actual answer. I can respect that over your prior response. I don’t think his skillset actually falls anywhere on the traditional "1-5" line. Seems like he wants to be a shooter but just doesn't have the touch yet. But also isn't a bruiser. The prototypical tall (but not too tall) white kid that Fran loved.

I'd agree, Alvaro at the 5 isn't a good fit. He's not really good on the block and he seems to have a lot of his turnovers when he has his back to the basket. Alvaro is fine at home but in road games he becomes really passive. His H/A splits are bizzare

Home: 11.4 Pts, 4.6 Rebs, 2.5 Assists
Away: 1.8, 2.2 and 1.2

In Cooper’s defense, Ben’s probably still shredding some horrible habits allowed by Fran while still implementing his style (ie going under that screen against Illinois). I like Cooper, he’ll be fine, just a redshirt freshman
