How do you grade the Hawk's portal pickups?

We needed safeties and we got 2 or more with experience and they could be very good. We needed a lot on the DLine and we have two big bodies with experience at DTackle and a couple of Dends.

Diaz I hope can be the man along with receivers we have. What looks like a starting type running back for depth and carries.

IIRC one OLine pickup with experience. I probably missed a couple , oh we got a kicker.

Anyway on a 5 scale I would say very good at 4 out of 5 as I think they will improve their skills and strength.

I think overall the Hawks did well. Of course we won’t know for sure yet how they will pan out, but I think they’ll be ok.

I looked at ESPN s list of top 50 portal transfers and it is obvious that bidding on these types was very expensive with the bulk of them going sec or Texas tech( unless following a coach like Campbell or Whinningham to PSU and Mich).

IU and OSU were actively buying guys also.
Otherwise, it was a net loss for BIG programs in that top 50.
Most BIG programs are adopting the Iowa approach.

From afar, I am pleased with how they did in the portal. They addressed areas of need and brought in kids who by all accounts seem to have a chance to come in and compete right away.

So, at this time, if filtered through the lens of the “Money Ball” approach, I give it 5/5.

The caveat is how much money they spent on these guys and of course how they pan out. The 2005 class was epic but the results were far from it.

Dochterman gives the haul so far an A-

I agree and that we addressed and filled spots of 2 guys who were projected starters that left with entringer and Allen. DE we got some young guys on roster too like epenesa but wise to add depth. Even at rb we lost 2 guys and even with 3 very good backs I like the addition especially with out adding one in our recruiting class. Wr if just one of them we hit one I still say it’s a success to add to passing game with our TEs and RVZ. Another thing I took away as a positive is we added no LB that tells me Parker and Wallace feel really good with young guys on our roster.

I realize that this year we had a very large senior class, and it gave our coaching staff, a unique opportunity to use the portal to improve all of our weak spots without having to chase a bunch of guys away. We won’t get that every year. The thing I like about what we’ve been doing is, we are identifying guys that our coaching staff wants and feels would fit and bringing them in with multiple years of eligibility so that they can compete even if it takes them a year to become Iowa and Big Ten ready. That is not something we’ve done in the past. Just for that, I’m giving our coaching staff an a for effort. Some of these guys won’t work out, a couple of them will probably be incredible pick ups.

It’s laughably homerish to say A- today.

could it be that grade on October 1, sure. But today there are just way too many unknowns. Not one has played at the power level and we know production on the lower levels doesn’t always translate.

if we landed a bunch of guys with success in the acc or big 12. And yes that doesn’t guarantee more success but is certainly a good indicator.

our picks up fill our needs, they have some decent upside, but are so full of unknown factors you can’t say A

Receiver, running back and safety look like good grades. D line won’t know for a while

That class did help get the Hawks a bowl win over South Carolina their junior years and then an Orange Bowl win their senior year. Not too shabby.
Yeah, but the big names in that class—Dan Doering and Jake Christensen—were busts. I know there were a couple of other big names in that class that didn’t really pan out or were injured a lot like Tony Moeaki.

Guys that were big-time contributors to that Orange Bowl team were mostly from other classes or lower ranked like Pat Angerer.

JFC.

Just don’t respond or better yet don’t open a thread unless it has something to do with running the football or Iowa’s record.

You aren’t cute and you sure as hell aren’t clever. Do everyone on this board a favor and just STFU.
Simply answered the question in the title of the thread.

Not sure what the problem with that would be

Productive fcs players properly scouted probably pan out better than P4 backups. One key is these guys mostly have 2-3 years left. So still developmental
Something to be said about offering a player with plenty of tape to review, even if at FCS level. Compared to offering a guy who has been riding the pine at a P4, based off of HS tape.

I would give it a C. Maybe some depth pieces in there. I think we lost more than we added in some areas. The mid majors a really a tough gamble when making the move to power 2 football. Usually doesn't work out.

If Iowa wants to continue competing with the middle of the B1G I think Iowa might have enough pieces to fall somewhere between 5th - 8th in the conference. Iowa isn't finishing top 4 in the B1G though. QB is a real concern that will determine that placement.

He's carving out his own level of douchebag and doing quite well at it.
I put him on ignore a long time ago, and life has been better because of it. I got a laugh out of his schtick for a while, but eventually it became insufferable. I'm sure he'll be along to laugh emoji this post shortly, but let him LOL all he wants.

8/10. Like that some of these guys have big production & FCS accolades.
