With portal wrapping up today. Be interesting what the final numbers are for schools who lost and added. I think this is another year where Iowa will be near the top of the list for fewest players lost. Testament to the staff.
Don’t believe the portal closes. It’s just nobody else can enter (sans teams still playing or coaches changes)

True I was thinking more along of the lines of where roster is. No spring portal and now roster lot more stable going into spring practice. Minus P which sounds like Iowa zeroing in on we didn’t lose much especially compared to most and what we did addressed that position with Allen and entringer leaving.

Yep. If a kid wants in spring ball he needs to get his registration in quick

See where Iowa decommit nick brooks left Texas and committed to bama. Guess they got to keep the tradition of having former Iowa OL commits on their roster going.

Amazing how we were semi-freaking out about Proctor and it was possibly the best thing for the collective unit. I wonder how much motivation they drew from that in the aftermath.

IDK what that tweet is talking about. There are 11,500 roster spots (85 scholarships per team) in FBS alone. And that transfer portal total includes guys from FCS, D2 and D3. Nothing burger tweet there.
Actually not. Approximately 30% of players from FBS schools either end up not getting a position or are forced to select a school in a lower division. That's OK, but if the change is being made for financial reasons NIL or to better your draft stock, those players will be sorely disappointed. When Iowa or any other school selects a player from a lower division to fill a spot vacated by a player, that is one spot that an FBS player in the portal will not be selected at.

Just saw this about the punter replacement:

Former Simpson punter Tanner Philpott is headed to Iowa City after having earned Division III third-team All-America recognition this past season for Simpson College in Indianola.

Philpott averaged 43.9 yards on 40 punts this past season with 16 of his punts downed inside the 20-yard line.

Iowa has a void to fill after punter after two-year starter Rhys Dakin transferred to Michigan State where former Iowa special teams coordinator LeVar Woods is now the assistant head coach and special teams coordinator under new head coach Pat Fitzgerald.

Philpott has two seasons of eligibility.

Strange...thought they were finalizing an Australian. Maybe Philpott is just a depth piece.

Dakin averaged 43.6 yds per punt last season... Philpott averaged slightly more... I don't know how D3 don't translate to D1..
if the kid is better... the kid is better.. no?

Assuming his time getting off punts isn’t too slow, shouldn’t make a big difference moving up to D1.

Hopefully he’s more consistent than Dakin & better at pinning it inside the 20.

Here's what I'm seeing at the moment (top offers listed to the right of the name)

WR - TONY DIAZ - ILL - KENTUCKY - VA TECH
[elite] WR - Lance Beeghley - ARIZONA STATE
WR - EVAN JAMES - MICHIGAN STATE
DE - LANCE INGOLD - NORTHWESTERN
DE - KAHMARI BROWN - PURDUE
DL - BRICE STEVENSON - [SOUTHERN MISS/TEMPLE]
DL - Emmanuel Olagbaju - [CONNECTICUT/TEMPLE]
K - ELI OZICK - [?]
S - ANTHONY HAWKINS - [?]
S - XAVIER STYLES - PITT
[elite] S - TYLER BROWN - FLORIDA STATE - UCLA
RB - LJ PHILLIPS JR. - PENN STATE
[elite] OL - TRENT WILSON - UCLA

TRANSFERS OUT
[elite] CJ BELL - ?
JACKSON STRATTON - ?
RHYS DAKIN - MICHIGAN STATE
JAZZIUN PATTERSON - MICHIGAN STATE
KOEN ENTRINGER - LOUISVILLE
BRIAN ALLEN - VANDERBILT
KAEL KOLARIK - South Dakota
TERRELL WASHINGTON JR - NEW MEXICO STATE

Rivals classifies 3 incoming portal players as "elite". And one out-going player as "elite".
When you look at the macro-picture it looks like we are acquiring more talent than we are surrendering. Kudos to the staff. At the same time, the guys leaving are mostly going to FBS programs. The newbys are mainly coming from lower-tier programs.
Having said all that IT IS PRAISEWORTHY that almost all the additions have at least one P5 (the 5th is ND-Wash State-Oregon State) offer. I consider those worthwhile offers and a statement on the quality of the recruit.

And now for the obvious: WE HAVE THE PLAYER TALENT TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS NEXT YEAR.

Indiana is playing for a natty in a few hours and they have 0 five star recruits on their roster. Identify talented players and develop them,

That may be true, but realize it is in the players own interest to inflate their offer list. You never know when a suckerk will come along and make you an offer.
