Lost 2 RBs to the portal and had no high school RB recruits. I’m sure they knew they would bring in somebody.

Shonn Green didnt even get all the carries. Running backs are different than playing defensive back. Both types of players do not carry a lot of extra fat and dbacks can be pretty lean. Defensive backs maybe get winded but the starters never come out unless it is a blowout.
Running backs pushing a pile of 4 or 5 280+ pound defenders use up a whole lot more oxygen and energy\
So all these guys are going to get carries. Moulton has proved himself for being able to see the hole and get through it and he is pretty strong. X and McNeil have shown flashes.
If the new guy Phillips beats them all out for most carries, not all carries, then that just means the team is better for it
Good/Great teams do not pass on an opportunity to make the team better, because feelings may get hurt.
These guys are all competitors and if there are any that don’t expect to have to compete, you are quite honestly better off without them.
I don’t know what it is with Hawk fans on this topic. Some seriously need to take a road trip over to check out other team’s depth charts. Just don’t seem to see other team’s fans fretting over the possibility that a player may leave every time a good one is added. Do you guys seriously think other Top 25 teams have one good starter and a bunch of bums behind them?
This is big time college football. The fact that only one player can start, is not exclusive of Iowa football. At the RB position, probably more than any other position, carries need to be shared in the interest of the athlete’s health. RB’s having a short shelf life in the NFL doesn’t just start in their NFL career. All the carries before take a toll also.
In the Portal Era, it really isn’t worth worrying about. There will be departures/additions every year. Players tend to enjoy the culture of this team, the coaches, the other players. For the most part, most seem to want to be a part of this team. That is better than can be said for many other teams.
It is what it is, and teams that hesitate to improve their team, will certainly come up on the short end of this era of college football.

McNeil played too many games to redshirt as a freshman, but it doesn't mean he doesn't still have one to use going forward if needed.

It's also the timing. The portal is open a few more days for non-playoff teams. If an RB were to enter the portal now, unless they are a sure-fire starter, odds are they would go unpicked. Then they choices are, walk on somewhere else for almost no money, come crawling back for less money or sit out a season for zero money. Taking a running back late in the portal may upset other running backs, but their options are extremely limited other than to suck it up and win the job.
Well said, unless you have some sort of connection to a player and you want them to start, every time a new player is better than a starter and beats out the starter your team should be better.
Several positions on the football team require depth. One is running back because besides running with the ball they are pushing piles multiple 200 to 300 pound men forward and fighting off their efforts to tackle you. That action takes way more energy than just running. The same for DLInemen who are constantly trying to fight through big OLinemen and multiple blockers and chase down QBs.
You need a starter and backup for these positions if not a 3rd level player.
Look at cornerbacks, the starter never comes out, for the most part they are lean without having to add extra bulk, so they run short wind sprints all game long.

North Dakota DL looking at Iowa? He may have committed to UCONN but listed as a DT target.
It's that one guy, played football at that other school. He's in the transfer portal. Looking at other schools, we should know when he tells us what he decides.
