It’s funny seeing the fans that think they ran Calipari off, or the fans that think Mitch ran him off!
Here’s a dose of reality for you… Calipari went looking for the right program that could supply the necessary NIL to do what he wanted to do and UK’s donors simply couldn’t/ wouldn’t supply that for him, so he went where the money was. That’s it, that’s 90%+ why he left.
Now, fast forward to now, and his successor Mark Pope, has yet to land a single 5* or top portal transfer, going on two years, and everyone is either blaming the JMI contract, Pope’s fragile personality when it comes to closing the deal, or both!
What if it’s simply the lack of consistent large NIL donors like it was going to be with Calipari? What if that $22 million smokescreen was just that, a smokescreen? What if UK knew they were going to need a new football HC, and had no choice but to sandbag all their NIL to get a coach, pay off Stoops, and buy a mostly new team?
What if it was the NIL situation that turned off Drew and Hurley? We may never fully know, but one thing is for certain…
Big time recruits are passing up the opportunity to play at UK for lesser schools, and if it wasn’t a money issue, why on Earth would any UK MCBB coach be sitting at 0- for 30 on 5*’s alone, when almost half of those whiffs came before the new JMI deal?
Remember when it was leaked that Pope told recruits that he doesn’t get into “bidding wars” with other rivals? Maybe, just maybe, he doesn’t, because he can’t!
