Chapman back out on the mat. Good to see. 6-2 after the 1st. Levi with the bow & arrow for the pin fall in the 2nd.
I think in today’s wrestling landscape, being a freshman doesn’t matter if you got the skills to back it up. Get what ur saying tho like varsity vs JVthe gap between these 2 teams is immense. Its like a Freshman team vs Varsity
The starters would have got pummeled as well. What difference does 36-0 instead of 46-0 really make? Outside of some Rutgers and PSU fans no one cared or watched this match.I hate to be embarrassed on national TV. For a team that values dual meets, why did we wrestle so many back-ups? I know we want to get these young guys experience - but against the #1 team? There are plenty of opportunities during tournaments and in other matches to get experience. Can’t image another Rutgers team putting backups in before a national TV audiences.
State Penns freshman would probably out score our whole team.the gap between these 2 teams is immense. Its like a Freshman team vs Varsity
Hopefully this Knox thing can change the tide bc this program is in the dumps right now and this year’s Team will not have an AA again. Several wrestlers have really regressed, transfers have not lived up to expectations and besides maybe Olivieri who knows wth is going on and SCW who got dismantled today and Pinto who’s even winning a match at NCAAsThe starters would have got pummeled as well. Everyone knew it'd be a blood bath so why tune in. This one definitely didn't pique the wrestling worlds interest. Everyone was watching Lehigh vs Cornell that's interesting, not this side show.
Hate it when we get matched up with PSU.. the confidence shaken from this match usually outweighs any experienced gained from it. Have yet to see anyone get lit a fire from this match but we have seen the other way around. The starters would have got pummeled as well. What difference does 36-0 instead of 46-0 really make? Some on here will cope and deny much regression but rather simply that some wrestlers have reverted back to their true form, what they have always been instead.Hopefully this Knox thing can change the tide bc this program is in the dumps right now and this year’s Team will not have an AA again. The issue is 9 out of 10 matches were bonus points and really not even competitive. The 10th match is a 6th year senior against an undersized RS Freshman and did very little to take advantage of size and experience. Iowa may only win 3 matches but the losses will be mostly competitive. I expected a shutout today but I expected some fire. I saw no fire and quite honestly I saw some really bad wrestling. Effort, aggression, toughness has nothing to do with skill. It was way too easy for PSU.I don't get the whole "embarrassed" talk. Sure, we would of loved to have seen points, but this PSU is just that good. Someone made the comparison of Varsity vs JV. More like National Olympic B team vs a college team. Some guys competed, others stood no chance. Are you seriously surprised by the shutout? I'm not. Iowa might get two wins against them (3 at best).
We're literally wrestling world medalists in every match except heavyweight and 141. Embarrassing is almost losing to Drexel. The issue is 9 out of 10 matches were bonus points and really not even competitive. I agree that they need to be tougher, stronger, take more shots and competive. I will never argue that. I don't think you truly understand how good Penn State is. They have guys that were doing the same to senior athletes (as what we saw today) while they were in high school. Other than Ohio State, they'll be doing just about the same to every team in the Big 10, even then it'll be a blowout. It embarrassing because the kids we put out there couldn’t defend themselves. It looked like Delbarton wrestling public schools at the districts. I’m not saying you need to win matches but our Division 1 athletes need to compete, stay strong in positions, and manage fundamentals. This looked like we found 10 students who wrestled in high school and asked them “How would you like to get on the mat with Penn State”?
The main issue with this program is the culture, no one seems hard nosed or tough. We never see our kids just “will themselves” to win a position. Those things don’t take talent they take a strong program culture.
I think we are really starting to see what we lost in Donnie to Columbia.
It’s not just this PSU match.. we have underperformed against said Drexel, Oklahoma, Nc State, basically the whole season.. do you not agree?I agree that they need to be tougher, stronger, take more shots and competive. Oh, I don't think we have an AA on this team (this year), other than maybe Pinto and a red hot Shawver and Olivieri. It’s not just this PSU match.. we have underperformed against said Drexel, Oklahoma, Nc State, basically the whole season.. do you not agree?
It did not look like we had anyone that is going to AA out on the mat against PSU.. thought SCW would be closer to Rocco..
I know you are high on the young guys and they did show some glimpses, Magro reversal and riding a little, Ford with first take down but I don’t see anyone really being a future AA that went.
I guess the positives from the match is Smith not getting bonused, Shawver keeping first two periods competitive, and Catka wrestling a competitve match.
At least we came out and scrapped.
I hadn't even brought up the Greatest Miss Of All Time. Either you are drunk/stoned or you really don't know who you are responding to. That's over a half dozen times you tried to pin something on me which I didn't say. Since you brought it up though, three Penn Staters and two Hawkeyes never showing up to RU is hardly HALF wrong on one thing. It's 100% wrong and a major whiff.I was half wrong on one thing . The Penn State transfers.Just give it a rest already.I was right on Cooperman leaving, Mason not wrestling anymore, Suriano and Camp transfers, and Donny leaving. I said all before anyone really knew or it was in the works. I caught sнit for it, but later everyone said ...you were right. So lets see how all this Olivieri and Knox situations unfold before you pronounce sentencing. No way this an academic issue with Olivieri.May not be Mob stuff, but something is going on besides a bad grade in class.I thought he was an excellent student, from what I recall people stating.Lets see.
They were HS teammates and very good friends. Barr was on a recent interview saying He rolled with Cotton more than anyone and that he was his main training partner.Cotton is getting beat, but he is scrappin with Barr.
In most cases yes PSU will win prior to even showing up with your thoughts above. Specific to Rutgers teams I want a team that scraps and the year Nolf got hurt we came to wrestle. It helps seeing others on the team not getting mauled but for most of the match there was fire and energy. Yesterday in a lot of the matches it was a learning experience and in others don’t know what to say. We’ve seen guys galvanize a program before and this is my hope for next year along with new leadership. I’m thankful for Goody and as others have said let him stay on but we need new blood. We don’t have the money for a flashy head coach but I feel we could attract a meaningful upgrade. They were HS teammates and very good friends. And you’re right. Cotton came to “scrap”
Which brings up a questions..do other wrestlers just get in their own heads wrestling PSU guys? Is it psychological? Cotton didn’t have any reservations on going out and trying to win against Barr because he knows him. Meanwhile in most matches (not just Rutgers). The PSU opponents just try to stay on the edge and back up. Just trying not to get bonused. For example..Smith did absolutely no wrestling for 7 minutes. Why? The lore of Luke Lilledahl? If he was teammates with Luke at one point I guarantee he’d actually try to win.
I’d much rather watch people like Cotton go out and scrap that watch guys stand on edge for 7 minutes
Just something I’ve thought about over the years..
I’m quite disappointed in RU wrestling right now. Yes, as a PSU alumnus, I was fine with the result, but I thought Rutgers would at least put their best on the mat and compete. So as an RU wrestling season ticket holder, still can’t wrap my head around what - 4 2nd stringers being sent out?? Where was Clarke, White, Oliveri ?? RU gave up before the first bout - that is what should be unacceptable to RU fans. This attitude towards dual meets is what is hurting the sport - put your best out there, and let the chips fall where they may. Coach Goodale, who I have spoken to many times, and even had a beer with at the Rutgers Club, did not do RU wrestling any favors with that performance. In most cases yes PSU will win prior to even showing up with your thoughts above. Why do guys like Barr and Mesenbrink go out and Tf/pin most opponents and other guy like Lilledahl’s matches tend to be closer? Is it mainly psychological or are they up against more guys that came to “scrap”? Perhaps their lore is what causes their opponents to go a certain style vs them as well? They were HS teammates and very good friends. Also..this is why a “dual” to determine national championship would be a joke. You’d see a bunch of guys stalling and turtling up instead of trying to actually win

The program is stagnant and stale, and even slowly declining. Putting White and Clark in would most likely have resulted in the exact same results. Oliveri has been benched/(injured) for an undisclosed reason. As stated, Knox will bring an infusion of talent and excitement into the program. In addition, with some of the other young guys (Harar brothers, Magro, Zalota, SCW, etc. (Chapman a wildcard, but I like what I hear so far), the program looks to have an upside in the future. Time will tell.I’m quite disappointed in RU wrestling right now. Yes, as a PSU alumnus, I was fine with the result, but I thought Rutgers would at least put their best on the mat and compete. I’m hoping RU takes the Michigan dual more seriously this Friday. See you there.
What upside is there by putting White and Clark out there? Frankly, I think the freshman are better. Perhaps they won the coach over? There is zero upside to putting them in now. Olivieri hasn't wrestled in over a month due to an off the mat issue. It's uncertain if he'll wrestle again this season.I’m quite disappointed in RU wrestling right now. Mesenbrink has a non stop motor. I think he’s a good comparable for Bassett. Why do guys like Barr and Mesenbrink go out and Tf/pin most opponents and other guy like Lilledahl’s matches tend to be closer? Also the point of the paycom/dual championship thing is to draw in more fans and “grow the sport”. It’s probably bad for the sport when the mindset is “all that matters is March” as evident in how few matches now that are occurring/sitting guys and programs cutting the sport slowly. Just some things I’ve thought about over the years as well.
The freshmen have higher upside. Clark and White were never winning but maybe guys like Magro or Chapman or whoever else catch their opponent. What upside is there by putting White and Clark out there? Clark and White shut down/are very ineffective with their offensive mindset vs. better wrestlers. Their abilities are what they are and their time here is well appreciated but is ticking away. Get the youngsters in there and give them some mat time. I'd rather see wrestlers try to score and fail versus wrestlers who don't and fail. The freshmen have higher upside. Clark and White were never winning but maybe guys like Magro or Chapman or whoever else catch their opponent.
I understand the motivation to put the freshman in the lineup, I guess - but were they the better wrestlers? I have my doubts - especially at Clarke’s weight. Fans want to see the best for each school - don’t think that was Coach Goodale’s mindset. The conference has a dual championship - gives out a conference title trophy every season, along with the conference tournament title. Shouldn’t RU try to win that? That is a more realistic title than the individual conference tournament - RU usually has a better dual team than tourney team. What we saw yesterday was NOT competitive wrestling - it was, in context, a massacre. That isn’t good for the sport - why should fans show up to see one team (or in some cases, both teams) surrender before the darn dual meet even begins? I’ve see several postings on this board of people either reducing their season ticket purchase, or giving them up all together. Still have mine, but my attendance has reduced over the years due to silliness like wrestling Gardner Webb or what Coach Goodale did yesterday - not worth the effort of attending. RU can and should do better. The freshmen have higher upside. Clark and White were never winning but maybe guys like Magro or Chapman or whoever else catch their opponent.
As a Penn state fan, stop going to Rutgers matches, you’ll be happier.I understand the motivation to put the freshman in the lineup, I guess - but were they the better wrestlers? “Try to score”? Who did that? Certainly not at 125, 133, 141 got one takedown, 149 took advantage of an SVN mistake and got 1 reversal, 157 got bulldozed, 165 scored 1 takedown, etc. There was lots of edge wrestling, stall warnings, and almost no shooting. I’m not talking about results here, I’m talking about style, effort, aggressiveness - and I saw very little of it. Sports, at their essence, are entertainment. Who was entertained by what we saw yesterday (other than the PSU faithful in attendance). RU can, and should do better - or they risk losing more and more fans/attendance…Clark and White shut down/are very ineffective with their offensive mindset vs. better wrestlers. Not an option; I’d like to see RU have the 2nd best program in the country! Also an RU football season tix holder since 2014 - as long as it isn’t against PSU, I want to see Rutgers WIN - Jersey guy, born and raised! As a Penn state fan, stop going to Rutgers matches, you’ll be happier.
