Additions vs Subtractions

You know who we have seen portal out... and who we have received portal commitments from to date. So... are we better off or worse off once you look at the loses vs gains. I know, the additions are hard to gauge since nobody has played a down as a Hawk. But gut feeling if we are better off or worse off? I vote better off.

Before today we were worse off, today we are better off. Still want a quality DT though.

I’d say better. We’ve replaced what we lost and upgraded depth.

S lose Entringer but bring in 2 guys that have 2 & 3 years left that started for playoff team and FCS frosh AA. This one at first stung but kudos to staff finding very good replacements.

Allen goes but get 2 DE one with good #s At smaller school. I’ll admit I thought Allen would have break out year but finished with only .5 sack. Leaves it a wide open race outside merriweather with young guys (epenesa) already on roster plus these 2 but least have more depth.

Jaz and Washington left a position that outside TE we are most stacked at. they’d been 3/4th option at best. Moulten and McNeil top 2 plus X returns.

rest of additions is just a bonus where we are better. Diaz could be huge to go with RVZ and our TEs for passing game. Got a great young guy on OL with true frosh from JMU that started. A DT like DE a postion outside of Hawthorne unproven but adds to the depth. And we got a Kicker to replace Stevens now just need to find a P. I know portal isn’t done yet but knock on wood Iowa has limited the loss of impact guys from 2 deeps past few years

Right now I think better because we need quick help in the DLIne and some other spots. If Diaz is really good then that is a huge plus.

But Allen could have been explosive next year getting 60+% of the snaps, we will never know. So that is a minus.

Entringer loss would be huge except Phil is bringing in about 4 players and a couple look ready to play. But it is great to have experience in his system so right now we are minus both safeties, X and Koen, without much experience. Luckily I think safety is probably easier to learn in his system than corner or Lbkr

Allen must have thought he could get big $$$ as he was slated to be a starter this coming year

Allen only had .5 sack last year. Not a big loss.

Entringer also replaceable. I can only think of one play he made all season. Transfer from JMU might be better.

Definitely better off, IMO.

Diaz addition could be huge for us. Seemed to cover the areas where we lost pretty well.

Agree that another DT would be good.

You would think that would easy to recruit to Iowa.
Also curious about our QB situation
To me the only curious thing about th above situation is how he will play. Helenski is the qb in waiting.

Smh.

The game is only called "foot"ball.

A good kicking game is absolutely vital to success, and absolutely something to be proud of
Iowa has had a couple of punters who were better than good. When you have one of these he is one of the best players on your defense.

TT was a master at getting the ball to die or backspin inside the 10 (and our coverage team was first rate). Dakin did not have that skill OR a big leg, and coverage didn't seem to be as good. Maybe poor hang time led to that as well.

That's one thing that we are almost always amazing at. As far back as I can remember we've had great special teams players. I go back aways, like Roby days. 🤣

Better off but would love to get this WR visiting, an immediate impact DT and the RB that visited. As others have said:
- Koen was a big loss but got two good sounding safeties
- Brian Allen’s best game was kids day several years ago
- Rhys had a bad year, could be potential upgrade.
- I liked Jazz but he was RB2/3. Hoping we get the kid that visited, may be an upgrade.
- WR add was big.

What about that rb you said visited? Someone other that the fireplug rb that committed to IA?

I think it's too early to tell. We'll need to see who makes the starting line up and see how they perform. I remember fans being excited for Cade McNamara and Seth Anderson. Cade was a disaster and Seth was either injured, a no-show, or dropped half the passes that came his way.

A lot of the guys we got are multi year guys, with only the player from Holy Cross being a 1 year player. To me that shows that the staff are looking to develop these guys rather than just plug and play. But we can't rule out some of these guys starting right away. I would say the places to check first will be safety and DLine to see if there's any noticeable improvement.

for the additions: unless they had significant playing time at the FBS (or whatever we call it now) level, it's hard to project what they will be.

Entringer might have been our best tackler in the secondary. He was also amazing on 4th and short. He was the one that made a ton of those plays.

This regarding Allen^^^

He had 14 tackles in 12 games this year. Less than he had in 2024. Maybe he approved in the areas that don’t show up in the stats?

But, I just don’t think there was much improvement from Sophomore to Junior year like you would expect.
