I would feel a lot better if we signed some DT's

If we can get anyone we want then buy 6 of them big boys the nastier and meaner the better. Get some angry dudes that want to hurt the opposition every play
Honestly, most of the portal DTs I’ve seen didn’t move the needle for me but I don’t really know anything. I really liked the Simpson kid we signed out of Texas and it would be nice to see a couple of those Sophs or redshirt freshmen step in to roles. We have multiple 300lb+ underclassmen who look the part. IF the transfer isn’t noticeably better stick to your own kids.

Just need people that aren’t soft. Kids that want to make contact not just take up space.

We all knew besides QB, DT's was the biggest need and for 2nd strait year we are whiffing again. Rhule sucks at recruiting defensive linemen. The no Def line coach is hurting them in obvious ways.

EVERYBODY would like to pluck a top DT from the portal. The problem is that I don’t see many if any DTs in the portal who are “top” DTs. We’re looking but I doubt the agents for guys with NFL aspirations are telling them to sign with NU. LSU, Bama, Georgia, OSU etc etc are in the market for DTs. The odds of us finding an upgrade at DT in the portal aren’t very good.

The key is finding a kid that has high energy and wants to be coached up. Problem is, we have no D line coach. So........

Nonsense. We proved that ourselves last year by getting the highest rated dlineman from the 2024 class in Nwaneri, who then started as a freshman. They are out there, you just might need to devote resources to finding them. Hiring a great DL coach would be a nice start. I seriously hope we aren't going to bring on a DL coach after the portal is closed. That would be so Nebraska.

. Point noted. Nwaneri had some issues and was suspended by Mizzou. So far that seems to be working out okay. Somehow we’ve kept him eligible but he hasn’t been a difference maker. Who was the transfer we took who got busted for stealing Vape products? 😉. Talented guy

He started. Think about if we upgraded with a new starter at NT too. You don't have to get 1st round picks. Just need to improve over what you have.

Find me a DT with his talent willing to sign and I’m all for it. Not sure that guy is out there willing to come to NU at market rates. How much do you over pay to get that guy to sign with a 7 win team?

I see guys being brought in. We HAVE guys. What we need is size and talent. We need one or two run stuffers. If we cannot find someone to be play that role then we better beef up what we already have. I'm tired of our conditioning staff training all of our DL as if they are edge rushers.

We have multiple 300lb+ sophs and freshmen who were pretty highly recruited guys out of high school. Let’s see what they look like. Might just need somebody to light a fire under the a55 of a couple of them.

Very few 300 pounders who kept their weight on. But we do have guys. We're just stupid in how we develop them. Chest to chest, can't keep blockers off of them. But worse than technique is how we train them. If Tyson Terry is really 310 (I don't know) right now, then beef him up to 325. "Yeah, but that will be bad weight." people will say. It's as if nobody wants to develop a lineman who can take on double teams.

Nash was more effective at 310 than he was at 330.

Unless they are some freakishly gifted 5 star we don’t need high school recruits at DT. We need older, more physically developed guys, with game time experience. And unless you are getting some form of 4 year deal for the 5 star, I don’t want to waste the money and instead spend up for the old guys.
You take a guy with Suh-ish talent and then you pay to keep him happy. I think that’s the only way we get a top DT. That or you develop a few guys like Bo did. Find a guy with a terrible school and home situation that’s athletically gifted and build him up. The guy from KC we signed comes to mind. Name escapes me. I think he may still be in the NFL? Edit: Maliek Collins.

Cut out this nonsense. Just like everywhere else, there's plenty of talent in the portal. According to other positions I've watched, .8700 rating or better seems to be where you'd expect a P4 starter to be. And there's 23 DT's in the portal currently who fit that bill. https://247sports.com/season/2026-football/transferportaltop/?positionkey=61

Just because we fail to go after them, doesn't mean the talent isn't there.

Completely agree. We use being young as the ever-revolving excuse, but yet there's a very easy way to fix that.

No he wasn't. He was most effective his junior year. His senior year when he lost weight, he wasn't quite as effective.
He played with a knee injury most of his senior year. He had a noticeable limb most of the year and he didn’t play at 330 his junior year.

But as long as it helps your argument... Of course he has a mysterious injury that nobody else knows about.
