My opinion teams from the large urban metro areas like Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro shouldn’t be playing against smaller rural schools with boundaries.

I’ve been saying it for years. I know they are public schools but they need to be in their own class.

Trey is spot on!

It seems like I remember when we started realignment, there was some talk about counting charter school ADM differently to help with the imbalance. And the the general assembly-which is very much pro charter schools right now-said they could not be treated any differently than a traditional public school.

Now what SC did to overcome that potential legal snafu, is any out of district kid in your school counts as 1.5 students I think it was. Since charters dont have district lines, every student in the school counts 1.5. It also counts students who transfer and do not live within district lines 1.5. Although, I think alot more kids who transfer at least get an address within the district than stay in their previous one.

The population of a charter school’s area needs to be factored in and ADM adjusted for that. But not holding my breath.

Very well written article Trey. I think within the next decade or two the problems at the 1A, 2A and 3A level will trickle up to higher classifications as enrollment grows and charters become more the norm.

I am a public school advocate but I do understand some of the problems public school have, including some discipline issues. I am in contact with public school teachers and the stories I hear about how students treat and talk to teachers seems almost unbelievable. If I were a new parent today, I might consider a charter - I don’t know for sure. I do wonder if the decision to attend a charter is solely athletic or do other factors come into play?

Trey is 100% on point, every athlete wants a legitimate opportunity to win. The numbers don’t lie at the lower classifications.

Make sure Charlotte Catholic, Bishop McGuiness, Cardinal Gibbons, and Christ the King are out of the NCHSAA too.
Corvian, CSD, MIC and all other charters should be in their own division and compete in their own playoff, IMO. Play them if you wish during your non conference schedule, but they should not be in the playoffs against rural, traditional public schools.

Its almost like since we have 7 classes now, maybe we should have made 6 for traditional public schools, and 1 for charter schools and the few private schools that belong to NCHSAA. As otis mentioned, play them if you want in the non conference. But they are in their own playoff classification.

Nothing is going to change. Nothing is going to be done. People have allowed the ones in charge to villify their public schools. They've allowed them to drain resources and funds. They've allowed them to give charters a special set of rules while competing against schools they've handcuffed. We've allowed this and we will continue to allow unregulated growth of charter schools across the state.

Just accept it unless you're willing to make change in Raleigh.
