Bielema on NIL

The world that has been created through NIL, revenue share and the portal that we operate in now has erased the limitations to a certain level,” Bielema told The Athletic on Saturday, a few days after his Illini defeated Tennessee in the Music City Bowl. “I know this: Before I came here, we’d never beaten an SEC team in our history, and we’ve now beaten two back-to-back (in bowl games).”

The reality is this, there were some very famous, very successful coaches that were having a lot of success when the NIL was illegal,”

Before NIL and the portal became so prolific, Alabama and Georgia — the SEC’s two biggest heavyweights — stockpiled talent. That is much harder to do now.

We flipped a kid from Alabama on signing day,” said Bielema. “When has that happened? When it’s equal, it’s everybody’s game, man.”

Curious for those who know… who are Iowa’s richest alum and/or fans? Like, Indiana has Mark Cuban and apparently John Cougar Mellencamp. Does Iowa have people like that who donate to NIL?

Ashton Kutcher comes to mind as a celebrity who roots for Iowa. Who else?
Well Tom Arnold is a has been celebrity that did quite often. We need big money CEO / owner / tech guys

Any med school grads invent something worth billions?

Tom Arnold is another, but from what I've seen, Kutcher's net worth is far more..

Equal, lol. Sure Bert. There's "equal," and then there's "we all have sugar daddies while those guys don't."

This. Ashton Kutcher is probably the richest celebrity we have, but there has to be a lot more money out there with the top-notch medical, law and business schools at Iowa.

Alright guys I've had the idea for a long time but I'll finally bite the bullet. Me and my 14" hog will sign up for OnlyFans and I'll donate 95% of my income to Iowa's NIL. I really don't want to put myself out there like this but I don't see any other way we can compete.

i wouldn't mind it entirely if iowa doesn't play the big money game and instead doubles down on fundamentals, development of under rated guys, gameday coaching, and culture. 2025 was a nice window into this approach and hopefully 2026 will vindicate it more completely.

Agreed. Iowa is capable of spending enough money to get the right guys for what we do.

The now deceased UHC CEO was a U of I grad.

Can we sue Luigi Mangione? Pretty sure his family is loaded!
