I am no apologist for the current coaching regime and have no confidence that they can turn the ship around. However, it could be that the coaches had the resources but nevertheless decided not to match Kentucky's offer for a QB who hasn't played meaningful downs in two years. He is an unknown commodity. Not only would you have to increase that offer, but you likely then have to pay Lateef more than his current deal if you don't want him jumping into the portal. You also need money to fill other needs. Could be it just didn't make economic sense to Rhule to match Kentucky's offer.

(just saw the above posts after posting. Could have just said ditto)

Do you think its possible we could have easily matched Kentucky or outbid them, but decided Minchey wasnt worth it?

Have you ever been to a silent auction before where you could have afforded the $120 tray of Christmas cookies + santa mug, but decided you didnt want to spend that much on that item? You didnt lose out on the cookies because you didnt have the money.
Exactly

I don't think Kentucky outbidding Nebraska is that much of a shock or the end of the world for Nebraska. Kentucky has a new coach, and as we've seen with their basketball program, the UK boosters are willing to pump a bunch of money in for the new guy. On top of that, Stein has a lot of buzz right now. I mean, Leavitt's list was (presumably not anymore) LSU, Oregon, and Kentucky. There's some smoke in Lexington with Stein coming in.

I wouldn't get too tore up about this flip right now, but the clock is ticking.

I'll accept that as a logical explanation - if we land a decent QB.

If we end up with Chiles then no - I will not agree with that sentiment.
Fair enough.

I agree, given our current situation at QB, even though I don't think we're there yet, at some point you have to over-pay for what you're getting.

Not when it comes to his own money he didn’t
Yep. And he got that money by shopping himself around while simultaneously spouting his love of the program

Don't think many will feel sorry for this guy when the ax finally falls.

I know it sucks for us fans but if I was a college kid and got offered a better deal, I am taking it.

Now, I am 99% sure that the numbers we hear are totally off/inflated but still...

Say it was 200,000 at one school and 300,000 at another. That is more than most people will ever make in a year. You have to take the extra money

It's my opinion and my opinion only but the two factors I see with this was Minchey used Nebraska as a bargaining chip and it worked out for him. The second factor is Nebraska was never going to overpay for a QB and offered Minchey a good but not great amount of NIL money and Kentucky took advantage once they were told how much money Nebraska offered.

Nebraska has bigger needs than QB to be truthful about this whole mess we seem to be in right now. The bigger needs are getting players in from the portal who can play defense at a higher level and getting offensive linemen who can actually perform at a high level.

Don't get me wrong I thought Minchey would have been a perfect fit for Nebraska but let's face it he used Nebraska to leverage a better deal. Minchey could have used any other college to leverage a deal but he used Nebraska and Nebraska took the bait.

We pretend that last minute offers of more money is some shocking anomaly to college football. This issue has been endemic to college admissions across the spectrum for a decade as universities waitlist, then have less than a full class and have to throw scholarship monies at the last minute to lure enrollees from other universities who then change their college which creates a waterfall effect in last minute admissions.

Here is a story on that phenomenon which has nothing to do with football. The 2025 college admissions process | 1A

Maybe, I just think the timing was perfect for Kentucky. He had papers from Nebraska and was going to sign, Kentucky thought they had Leavitt, the he decided to take more visits. Kentucky then decided to spend more than everyone else on Minchey. There are other schools that need QBs, if he was using Nebraska as a bargaining chip, and his agent is worth a ****, there would have been more offers and he wouldn't have still been with Nebraska until the 11th hour.

Raiola is biding his time letting all the other top portal QBs get scooped up. Miami and Oregon at the very least are still on the board. I think Oregon might try to keep their guy with an insane number.

He always wanted to go to Kentucky because of Will Stein.

Rumor is they said that we offered less when it was time to sign.

Not sure if you saw the Todd McShay interview yesterday where he said Dante Moore's agent should contact the Raiders and try to get a definitive answer that Raiders are willing to take Moore at 1 because if not, Moore would be looking at the Jets and would be ahead to get paid at Oregon versus getting stuck with the Jets.
