I agree Lester would be better, Didn't KF make Wallace the Associate HC pretty much saying he is the HC in waiting, without really saying it lol

If that is what he is after, a discretionary rolling one year extension is the only thing that makes sense.
I agree that a new contract with a rolling 1-year extension is the way to go. Say, for every year that KF remains employed as HC on January 10, he will get one year added to his contract. Right now, he’s under contract through 2029 (4 years left). With this proposal, he will always have 4 years left.

The thing that is important — that many fans don’t understand — is that with coaching contracts, you never want a guy coaching on the last year of his contract. That screams lame duck to everyone — recruits, assistants, fans, media, etc. You want the contract to promote stability. There is a big difference between player contracts and coaches contracts. Almost no coach coaches until the end of his contract.

Honestly, I think the time is right to talk extension with KF, though I know that will make some fans’ heads spin right off their necks. I think a 1-year rolling extension makes the most sense, as it would keep you from having to revisit the topic in 2-3 years, if KF happens to still be coaching then.

The thing is, any other savvy head coach has already been using Ferentz' age against him for years. Even with a multi-year extension, it would be very easy to plant the seed of doubt in a young recruit's mind that Ferentz isn't going to be his head coach for the entire time he's at Iowa (among other fodder used to negatively recruit against Iowa).

True, but Iowa can counter with the argument that with almost any other school the guys we are recruiting may choose, there is as much likelihood of that school’s coach getting fired or leaving for another job as there is for KF leaving Iowa. A strong contract helps Iowa’s argument. Leaving KF with only 1 or 2 years left on his contract destroys it.

Honestly, there comes a time when you need to either extend a coach, or fire him. That’s where we were with Fran. I’m sure there are strong opinions both ways on whether we are there with Kirk.

Good lord, this is a lot of nothing.

In the Nebraska post game, KF had said he planned to be back next year. A bunch of articles came out that KF proclaimed he would return next season, like that is entirely up to him. In reality, he cannot unilaterally decide if he will be the coach at Iowa next year.

These more recent comments were meant to address all the articles about his "proclamation". All he was saying was he plans to continue coaching at Iowa if the university continues to employ him, which they will.
