That's right. He's a heck of a coach, but his recruiting was also sub-par and getting worse. The forecast for his continued tenure at UK was very concerning at the time. (For the record, I also think Calipari should have taken the UCLA job and left UK while others were begging him to stay.)...
Wasn't he the coach of the 2006-07 team too? You know, the team that went 22-12 and lost in the second round? That team was an 8 seed--as was the 2005-06 team you referenced. Don't let Pope's and Calipari's records (post 2020) distort what you should expect of a UK basketball team.
As I said...
No, but I'm not wading into Dante's Inferno grading of criminality and moral sins. If you want to razz the Jayhawks every time one of their former players attempts or succeeds in murdering someone, be my guest. I think it's a weird flex.
We have had our share of misbehavior from former players. From the silly and frustrating antics of Richie Farmer and Rex Chapman to the stomach-churning criminality of Michael Porter. You don't have to look to the distant past either. Ramal Bradley and Kerr Kriisa were arrested this summer.
Congrats, Coach Smith! Although he stayed too long (and arguably got too complacent), I will always remember his late 90's and early 2000's teams fondly. More importantly, he and Donna seem to be wonderful people too.
In my experience, folks within 500 miles of the state border know Lex, Louisville, BG, Owensboro, E-Town, Paducah, and Ashland (and maybe Richmond). Go beyond 500 miles and it narrows to Louisville, Lexington, and maybe BG.
I get the cynicism from some of our fans. I was intrigued by Jelavic's highlights last summer only to be disappointed by how he was used and how he played when he got floor time. Backo looks like he could play a stretch four and a backup five. I will reserve judgement until I see him play...
