Tracking how the B1G is tackling the Portal

Just to show where things are at right now at the upper tiers, Louisville landed Flory Bidunga from Kansas and Jackson Shelstad from Oregon reportedly for somewhere in the $6-9 million range for the pair and they are supposedly close to adding John Blackwell. So probably $10-15 million for 3 guys.

Tracking how the B1G is tackling the Portal

They brought in Wei Lin, who was a 20+ PPG guy in the Chinese pro league, on what was likely a good-sized financial deal. He was terrible for Oregon, EvanMiya ranked him 150th of 153 qualifying players in the B1G this year. Lin is now in the portal, likely because Oregon doesn't want to pay him...

Tracking how the B1G is tackling the Portal

This was framed in a slightly misleading way. I don't think their budget has been reduced, I think they want to free up more for higher-tier players and thought they were giving too much to guys who didn't contribute a lot (other than Shelstad, I don't think they wanted to lose him). You can't...

Will we accept a Crown bid if offered?

Tough scene for Washington, I saw a story today quoting Sprinkle that they actually wanted to go to the Crown and then they got snubbed.

The committee chair corrected them in an interview. Three teams were added after Miami. He said SMU was the last team voted into the field.

Will we accept a Crown bid if offered?

NIT bracket is out and there are no Big 10 teams

    Bubble Watch

There's a metric called "wins above bubble" that evaluates about how many more or less games a team would be expected to win than an average bubble team against the same schedule that team played. Miami has a WAB of 1.69, which means that because they went 31-1 an average bubble team would be...

Will we accept a Crown bid if offered?

The way the last game was covered by Lou and Matt made it sound like the season was over. Indiana just said they're declining NIT/Crown.

    Bubble Watch

Part of evaluating a team is projecting how they’ll do in the future. Part of it is evaluating how they’ve already done. You can’t do one of those things and ignore the other, it’s all part of the equation. Predicting how a team will do is useful but hypothetical. A team’s results are concrete...

Their predictive metrics aren't great, but their descriptive ones are fine and the committee uses those too. They were 21st in strength of record coming into today and 33rd in wins above bubble. They should still make it but their punishment for the weak schedule might be Dayton. I think going...

    2025-26 NET rankings thread

Musselman (USC) said in an Athletic article today they are likely declining NIT/Crown. Medved (Minnesota) sounded lukewarm about it too but didn't rule it out.

    2025-26 NET rankings thread

Last year made sense. We had two key guys out for the year, the team was really worn down. This year we have plenty of bodies, we shouldn’t be any more worn out than any other team at this point and I don’t think it’s good to keep turning down opportunities if they arise. So if an invite does...

    2025-26 NET rankings thread

From what I'm seeing we're currently 12th in the B1G in NET. Assuming 9 make the tournament and the NIT has 1 auto bid and Crown has 2 that suggests we'd at least get an invite to one of these if we stay ahead of Minnesota and USC. Although I see the Crown downsized from 16 to 8 so maybe there...

Game Thread: Northwestern vs. No. 15 Purdue

I think Tre’s going to become a really good player but those were a couple of tough plays at the end, helps off Cox for no reason on D to give up the go-ahead 3 then gets in a hurry and throws it away next time down.

    Next Year's Here

Part of making 3s as a team is getting the right guys open. Our opponents are absolutely thrilled to leave Singleton/Ciaravino/Page open on the perimeter and double Martinelli because they know those guys will shoot them and roughly 80% of the time miss them. If those guys shooting 3s eats up...
