Honestly, per capita crime rates are not a very good measure of crime problems. They serve to deflect the issue where it is actually the worst by making large cities look better and small cities look terrible.

Chicago is a great city to visit, and the crime problem is largely not taking place in places visitors like me would go. I’ve been these many times. But the crime problem is very real and the bad reputation is well earned.

That’s not a valid offset. The local economy is not entitled to the economic activity that occurs when residents travel elsewhere.
