I got a new silly one.

I think it's this tendency alone that is impeding my attempts to appreciate soccer. I am making an honest attempt to learn to appreciate soccer, to see the action away from the ball, see the strategies in motion and whatnot. I can stand the flop in basketball, though I do get tired of it when...

OT: Late to the party, Deadwood

I think part of what keeps its memory bright is a lack of any blighted, drawn-out seasons filled with nothing. If "Dexter" had ended after four seasons, it would be remembered as one of the great powerhouse stories of all time. But it ended in eight and is a total, watered-down joke.

OT: Transition from Candence to Huntington.

I have an incoming ACH payment from a freelance client due to arrive Tuesday. Before I sent that invoice on 6.1, I first searched online, then called the infoline number to ask if the client could still pay me through my existing routing/account number on 6.22. The person on the other end didn't...

My comment about new beat writer and your replies has me wondering:

I'm a big fan of the WSJ and I like the way they do their job. Somehow that publication has not been a regular part of my consciousness but I need to get it more regularly included. I've been an online subscriber before and may look at doing a digital subscription again. I agree the sussing...

My comment about new beat writer and your replies has me wondering:

I'm 54 - I subscribe to the Tupelo newspaper and have it delivered in print - I sometimes read it online also. I read The Atlantic online for national/world politics, not because their slant suits me, but because national/world politics are too complicated to gather in TV soundbites no matter...

New Starkville Dispatch beat writer for MSU. It's hard to believe

It's important that he writes stories no one else is telling. The days of writing a gamer and calling it a day are long gone, but there's definitely an appetite for content from a beat reporter with enthusiasm and drive. It's entirely up to him to make it good. *I'm an old newspaper guy myself...

OT: Good lunch spots in Tupelo, New Albany,

Danver's food is just simple, comfort food. I like their soups especially. Hot ham sandwiches good, butter-toasted buns. Solid salad bar. Just simple stuff. They do a pretty good soft-serve milkshake if you want a treat. Just simple though. It's still 1974 in there for the most part, minus the...

OT: Good lunch spots in Tupelo, New Albany,

Tupelo resident and Lee County native here - everywhere I'll recommend is a local, family place Lunch: Cafe 212 - Downtown near intersection of Main and Broadway - great sandwiches with house-made chicken salad, etc. CHOP BBQ - Veterans Blvd. south of Main - Clay Coleman was a great friend...

    A Will Clark Story

He knew all along he was on the record, he just didn't think Pearlman would frame the story as he did. Imagine saying such things to someone you met 5 minutes ago, even if he doesn't have a note pad in his hand and a recorder rolling. What did he think Pearlman was going to do with what he gave...

    A Will Clark Story

It's interesting to see someone who's written so much coming to this understanding. Because his impression of Will Clark is certainly accurate in both respects. I don't know Will Clark personally and don't pretend to know him any better than this writer does, but I have been around Will on a...

Went back and looked at McKeen's record...

I have wondered the same thing many times. I have always assumed there must be a hell of a lot more to the story. Such as, surely he was poking the wrong somebody a la Richard Williams.

    Best college towns

I agree. They list Las Vegas, NV. I'm sure that's a fun town to go to college in, but it's not anything I'd call a college town. I stopped there. To me, a college town is Auburn, Ala., or Starkville or Oxford -- a town that's largely defined by having a college that's a major, influential...

    Rufus French sentenced

On an unrelated note, anyone who wants to see what a poorly-AI written article looks like should read the story at that link. I don't doubt the facts are accurate, but they're bizarrely-presented. TLDR - The AI-written article sticks French's 1997 and 1998 football stats onto the end of a story...

    PSA Travel Ball

Oh that's 100% the case in our case here. No matter how good the raw athlete, there's technical proficiency necessary that's impossible to just pick up in organized practices. If you don't learn it on your own, you don't learn it. In my son's case, there were plenty of baseball availabilities...
