This plus some form of saving face with "we accomplished 100% of our goals" is probably the best path forward if deescalation is the goal, which it should be because what would we even be escalating to achieve at this point. Hopefully the right voices will prevail.
I don't understand how we didn't see this coming. Did we not think they would actually close the SOH? That and attacking energy assets around the region is their only real leverage. Whodathunkit but they did exactly what they have been saying they would do all along if the US or Israel...
I don't think the Iranian people have the means to truly rise up against the IRGC or it would have happened already. It would take who knows how many years of support from US troops on the ground to rebuild the nation like that. The only reason it was ever even stated as a goal is because...
It would seem to me that as they continue to kill off rounds and rounds of new military leaders and the IRGC becomes more fractured it's going to get harder and harder to reign this whole thing in.
It seems pretty clear we thought we could kill their leadership and blow a bunch of stuff up then they would come begging to us for a deal and offer to let Trump pick the new leader à la Venezuela. His early comments said as much.
Obviously that hasn't happened and now we are in a situation...
Good article.
"Beijing may also see a chance to help mediate talks along with other countries. Foreign Minister Wang Yi has already spoken to his counterparts in Oman and France, and China has announced it will send a special envoy to the Middle East"

It will be interesting to see what role China plays in a rebuilding/post war effort since they are a major ally and the primary international supplier of Iranian funds, ie their #1 customer.
The immediate "they did it to themselves lol" stuff was a common Israeli propaganda tactic in Gaza whenever something egregiously horrific happened, like a hospital being bombed. It was usually easy to disprove but their intelligence apparatus puts in the work online just as I'm sure our does...
The military is inherently political. The president at any given time is the Commander-In-Chief and his appointees lead each branch of the armed services as well as the rest of the DoD. Those elected and subsequently appointed officials guide our military strategy in Iran and elsewhere. The...
Its seems like people can't decide between "Iran is not a realistic military threat to the US or Israel" and "we had to do this because Iran is an imminent military threat to the US and Israel". Not necessarily just talking about posters in this thread, although I've seen it here too.
It's...
